What shampoo???..... I have 2 short haired and 2 long haired (texel) pigs. The texels long curly hair seems to get dirty a lot easier and more frequently than the short haired pigs. What kind of soap can I use to give them a bath??? I have used baby shampoo a few times, but am worried that may irritate their skin. Also, how frequently should they be bathed??? I usually bathe them once them get kinda stinky.

Re: What shampoo???..... I bathe mine once a month. Baby shampoo is good. They also have specially made shampoo for small animals. You can also get this spray botttle that has stuff in it that makes them smell good.

Re: What shampoo???..... Actually baby shampoo is not good for guinea pigs - it dries out their skin. A small animal shampoo (many use Four Paws Bunny Shampoo) is much better for them. Some people use shampoo formulated for kittens, but you have to make sure there are no pyrethins in it. Some guinea pigs never get a bath - too many baths can dry out their skin. check out this link Guinea Lynx :: Grooming I'm not sure what spray bottle stuff Sammy is talking about, but I would want to make certain it was safe before using it.

Re: What shampoo???..... No human shampoos, no kitten shampoos that have medications or pesticides in them. Avoid puppy and dog shampoos they aren't very good for pigs. Shampoos made for rabbits. ferrets or other small animals is ok as long as they have no meds or pesticides in them as well. I use Four Paws Bunny Bath. Sammy and Peanut- you are bathing your pig too frequently. They do not need a bath every month. At most pigs should only be bathed about 3 maybe 4 times per year.

Re: What shampoo???..... I use BunnyBath too. If you are in the midwest and have an Orscheln Farm & Home near you, they have it there, for I believe it was $3.99. I'm not 100% sure if all the stores stock it but the one by me does.

Re: What shampoo???..... I'm not sure why you would need to spray something on guinea pigs to begin with. I have 10 piggies and the only thing we do is the occasional bum bath - unless it's a bath for an introduction or a medical reason. Guinea pigs really should keep themselves clean and smelling pretty good unless their surroundings are dirty or there is some problem that prevents them from proper self-cleaning. I tried to find a list of ingredients in that spray but couldn't find anything yet. I would be very interested to hear other more experienced members' opinions on it.

Re: What shampoo???..... I was under the impression that sprays of any kind should be off limits around guinea pigs because of their delicate respiratory systems.

Re: What shampoo???..... There are a lot of products that claim they are safe/good for guinea pigs (mixed foods, exercise balls, treats, etc.). I don't trust anything that states that it's good and/or safe for guinea pigs. When we do need to do a bath (usually just for the occasional dirty butt), we use a mild, non-medicated, kitten shampoo. No baby shampoo (or people shampoo of any kind), and definitely no sprays.

Re: What shampoo???..... My long haired pigs get bathed every two three months with water only, and only when they need it. My short haired gets bathed about twice a year. Shampooing happens for all of them about twice a year and I think Gorgous Guineas is the best shampoo by far.
