Yes What precautions should I take?

I have had my pig in his grids cage for over a wek now, but he has never spent a full night in it. I have been nervous about it. Now that I am confident he will not do anything crazy, like try to jump or something, I am going to let him spend his first full night in it.

I am still a little bit nervous about it, but I am going to try it.

What things can I do to make sure nothing can go wrong?

It will be about 5 degrees tonight and snowing up here in Boston so he has 2 thick towels under him.

Answers are appreciated.

Thank You very much.

Re: What precautions should I take?

He should be just fine, there is no need to worry. I dont think I've ever heard of a pig getting out of an C&C (except my boys ) or getting hurt in anyway by one. If he is spending days in it just fine I'm sure he'll be okay all night. As long as your house is heated the weather shouldnt bother him.

Re: What precautions should I take?

How big is he? Do you have coroplast base? If you dont, then I suggest a tarp, or even cardboard that goes around the sides to prevent him trying to escape.

My girls are fat so they can not get through the grids (or get their head stuck in one of the little squares).

Re: What precautions should I take?

I don't have any coroplast yet. My mom said we will search around to find the cheapest price.

As I said, he was towels under him, and I am changing them in the morning. He is in the basement anyways so the floor is not a problem. Don't worry, it is about 60 degrees down there, just like the rest of the house, and I will cover his "playpen" with an old bed sheet. Is that ok?

Pigsforlife- Why cardboard to prevent him from escaping? If you don't mind me asking.

Re: What precautions should I take?

If he is small or thin and gets frightened or something, there is a chance he could get his head stuck in the bars. It shouldnt be a problem, but if you want to be on the safe side, put cardboard around the edges (perhaps use zip ties to attach it to the grids).

Make sure that there are no drafts. 60F = 15C which is cold, so if you have cuddle cups or houses or fleece scraps that he can hide under that would be a good idea as well.

A big pile of hay for your baby to snuggle in for warmth just in case, may be good to try.

I only have a PVC pipe, a pigloo, and a wood hidey house for houses. I have put an extra towel under the wooden hidey, and pigloo so he can snuggle.

My family and I don't like our house to be warmer than 62 degrees. But he is near the furnace and it produces a bit of heat, so he stays a little warmer. He is not too close but close enough that he can feel some of the heat.

I do not really have any card board around. I put all of his hidey and food, hay, water, etc... on one side so he does not have to go far for anything in the middle of the night. Is this a good thing to do?

Lightbulb Re: What precautions should I take?

fourboys4now- I just added a big pile of hay in his igloo, and he likes it, but he is eating the bed I just made!

But, I think it will work; until he eats all of it.

Re: What precautions should I take?

He did fairly well. He was only in until about 2:30 Am though. Because it started raining sort of heavy, and it go even colder, so, I was still up, and I out him back, but he was right back out at 9 AM. I am still really nervous and I dont know why, is that bad?

Re: What precautions should I take?

No, its not bad that your nervous, it just shows that you are concerned for your piggy and thats a good thing. I don't think you really need to be nervous though.

Re: What precautions should I take?

Thanks Jenni- I don't know why either. I was so ready for him to do it, and then, I looked out side and it got colder and colder and I thought that he should have warm shavings and his normal place to sleep in I guess?

Maybe you could connect his old cage to his grids?
