i-love-nev's piggys update thread!

OK, so alot of changes been made to the piggies and they're cages alot so though I would start of an update thread:

Currently I have Nevvelle, Basil, Billy-Bob (aka BB) and Darwin

Nev is a shorthaired piggy with an amazing character, he was my first piggie and he likes to think he is the dominant boar of the bunch!. :

Next was Basil, he is a black, tan and white abssinian (spelling?). We got him from someone who was planning to neuter him so she could put him with her girls (outside!) so we took him on and he lived with Nev: http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t.../?action=remix

A few months or so later along came BB (About july/august time?) . He was handed into a petshop so we took him home (NO fee!) and got him settled in with Nev and BB:

In december/january we were asked to look after a guinea pig.
Of course we coudnt resist so we got him and called him Darwin (means dear friend) more about him later on in the thread: http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t...rent=bb001.jpg

As they were still in the petstore cages with floor time everyday I decided to make a "make shift" cage for them to have a bit more space to run around in whilst they wernt having floor time, it was about the size of a 2x4, 1 foot too small but it was better then a 1.1/2' x 2.1/2' and an upper 1x2 petstore cage: http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t...=camera652.jpg

We then decided it was time to make a new cage so we did (check out gallery for pics). I need to go clean them out now anyways so will post more later!

Re: i-love-nev's piggys update thread!

Right well this has been an interesting day!

In the morning I decided to get the pigs out and put them out for free range whilst I cleaned the cage, I picked them all out and picked Darwin up and he had a lump under his chin (we havnt had the results from the test back that was taken how many days ago!) and it had a bit of crust skin on the end so I passed him to my mum and asked her to put a warm compress on it (on vets orders) and clean it to see if it was an abcess well just as I passed it to her it popped. Leaving my mum covered in all the puss that came out of it haha. Anyways we got him cleaned up, just keeping him clean and cleaning his neck every few hours now with some steri-wash, gonna take him to the vet tonight as it is shut right now and we dont have any other good vets around here so I am just hoping he is A-OK I am expecting an expensive vet bill but the good news is that the abcess really wasnt big so it left a tiny..well what would ya call it, hole? in his neck and it is pretty clean so I am thinking either 2-3 stiches or a shunt for the next 4 days. He is in a small cage at the moment (about the size of a 1.5x1.5 grid cage) relaxing in the lounge by the sofa. The rest of the gang are great but they are wondering where Dar is I think hehe.

Forgot to add - He has been his normal self all round! Eating veggies, he is sitting in his hay eating right now, lets me pick him straight up out the cage and he is drinking his water fine. It dosent seem to be bothering him its as if nothing has happened!

Re: i-love-nev's piggys update thread!

Thanks! Another update -

Darwin - Got back about 6:55pm last night and the vet just said we did the right thing and he prescribed (I think) 2ml of Baytril a day (1ml twice a day). He is doing really well, hates my guts at the moment because I had to force some Baytril down him yesterday but we syring it into some cucumber today and he loved it. I just gave him the last dose of the day and he seemed quite happy, still a bit tender around his neck but he is normal otherwise. The vet said he thinks it may have been the boars fighting amongst themselves so we split them up. Basil and BB are still together but seperate from Nev and Darwin, Nev and Darwin are in the top level with a divider beetween them until Dar heals more.

Nevvy - Well we got Nev out this morning and noticed a cut on his back. We think that BB being old keeps hurting them. We cleaned it and put some anti-bacterial powder on it and phoned the vet. Because I had a hamster with wet-tail before christmas he gave me some Baytril so I told my mum to tell him that we have got some extra Baytril and he said to give him a dose daily (cant remember the dose, we got it written down somewhere though) so Nev is also on a bit of baytril. These guinea pigs dont let us rest do they? No wonder we are called " cavy slaves"

Basil - Basil is holding up good, fat little docile piggy as usual and is loving all the new stuff in his cage and the new fleece! He seems to me happier just having BB as a buddy now aswell.

BB - Billy is also doing well, he has relaxed a lot more not having the young'uns running around all the time and he has just a little bit of dry skin on his back so we got some tea-tree skin cream from the vets and it is really helping. And it smells so good! Lol.

Well thats it for now, I will be putting some update pics up soon I think but the cat is sitting biteing at my ankles to go play with him so Good Bye!

Re: i-love-nev's piggys update thread!

Thanks Sammy+Peanut.

If all goes to plan I will be adopting 2 more boars in 3 days. Yay!
I am on a shortage of materials for a new cage because we wern't planning more guinea pigs yet but I will be able to get one build one for definate. The cage will be about 3x7 or something like that, maybe 3x6.
The boys are all doing OK today. Nev and Dar have taken their meds and both of they're injuries are healing well. BB and Basil are also doing well as usual, they are currently sitting with me on my bed listening to One Night Only on the TV haha.

Re: i-love-nev's piggys update thread!

Well havnt posted in a while so here goes:

Didn't adopt them two boars, my boars are going ok but BB is going to the vets tonight because of lethargy (vet said not to worry about that for a few reasons) and laboured breathing. Nev is ok - just not very happy he is seperated from Darwin, Darwin is fine and is out in his 3x6 pen at the moment eating some hay, Basil is doing great and is his normal happy self eating all he can!

Will post new pics later but now gotta go out and clean out the owl avairy, bye bye!

I have the very same comfortor cover as you! (on your bed above your cage in the linked pic). Wow, you sure are taking care of a lot of animals. Owl aviary?! How cool! Good for you.

How in the world did you get started with an owl aviary? Sounds awesome though and great job with all your pigs. Can't wait for updates.
