Does anyone's piggy spray urine on other pigs?

One of my piggies sprays urine on the other when they pass right behind her. I think she just gets scared. Does anyone else have any experience with this? Is there anything that can be done? Other than this, they seem to get along pretty well. If it doesn't stop, I can put them in c&c cages that are one grid apart. That's how they are now, and it's working well. I just wish I could house them together.

I've seen my pig spray my other pig only once. It seemed to me they were doing some dominence thing. But I'm not for sure it was a while back.

I know that Bonsai is the culprit, because when Tsunami passes right behind her, she kind of kicks up her back legs and Tsunami runs out of the way. And then I am left with urine sprayed on my wall That is not cool. But...I love her anyway Maybe that's just the way she is. At least I can put the two sort of next to each other.

Re: Does anyone's piggy spray urine on other pigs?

I just pulled my cage away from the wall and YUCK! One or both of mine has been sitting up in the raised loft spraying the wall like crazy! And it's been dripping down onto the heat register. That was one heck of a mess to clean up! I ended up backing the whole second level with choroplast, which doesn't stop the spraying, but definately saves my wall.

If yours spray out the front of the cage, I can't help you, though.

Re: Does anyone's piggy spray urine on other pigs?

One of my boys used to do that when he was a baby.
The older boys used to sniff his behind and then try and hump him, which he obviously didn't like.
So he started spraying on their heads every time they started the sniffing... which certainly seemed to put them off!

So I'm thinking you're probably right, she might just be nervous when the other pigs are behind her, and be doing it as a kind of defence mechanism.

Re: Does anyone's piggy spray urine on other pigs?

I had two girls, and they used to spray each other once in a while, now I have a neutered boy in with them, and whenever he bothers one of them (ie sniffing their butt) he gets a shot of pee to get rid of him.

Basically female pigs pee out behind them, with boys it's kind of directed down and a bit forwards. Girls can actually shoot pee to deter the unwanted affections of an amorous male. They are very accurate and it goes quite a distance.

I had to put coroplast up the walls of the sides and back of my cage. The laminate floor takes the brunt of what comes out the front. This is why you must wipe down the sides of the cage when you clean it!

My girls now shoot pee at whichever pig gets too close behond them. I tried to pick one of the girls up and she mustn't have realised it was me because I got the blast on my hand. So gross, but she looked suitably ashamed at my shriek. You can't be mad with a piggy though.

Pee squirts are nothing to worry about. It's totally normal behaviour. I've noticed they don't do it in order to scent territory, they just pee normally for that.

Re: Does anyone's piggy spray urine on other pigs?

My girls shoot pee at each other when they are annoyed. It means "back off" "stop that!" and the other piggie gets the message loud and clear. Most times it will make the other piggie stop whatever they are doing to annoy the one who shot the pee. As already stated, it's perfectly normal behaviour. I think mine do it more often when they're in heat and irritable.
