Unhappy Just 1 of the reasons rabbits with guinea pigs are a BIG no-go!

Sad story, I only just exerienced this and I NEVER EVER EVER want to experience it EVER again! So here goes:
The ferret rescue owner went on holiday for a few days (After all, she wont ever be able to have a summer holiday coz of the kits and she has a toddler and a baby to look after) so we volunteered to look after the ferts whilst she was away. So I went through to the garden today and saw the guinea pigs in the run, black rabbit in there aswell (not much bigger then the piggies!) and I immediatly was angry that she would keep them together, but I couldnt get in touch with her and I knew she would be angry if I seperated them but I still seperated them. This was tuesday. Got a phone call on thursday "Why did you take the rabbit out the guinea pigs, I put him back in there with them this morning" - another ferret rescue volunteer. By this time I was getting really stressed about it so tonight we went back over and I was being watched by the rescue volunteer so I couldnt do anything to get the rabbit out of the GP play pen so I turned to the night quaters (like a dog kennel thing) attached to the play pen to clean up and give them hay and a peruvian piggy came shooting out a tube and then I heard *BANG SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL* and turned around in shock and the little piggy was laying dead on the grass, the rabbit had kicked her up against the play pen wall and she broke her back. A very sad sight indeed. The rabbit is at my house in a play pen in the living room until a new pen can be built for him. . . Sorry little piggy.

I should have done more for you but I didnt .

Oh my gosh! You told them that injuries/death were possible when guinea pigs were caged with bunnies right? I think people should really do their research before deciding that it's okay to house to very different animals together. I feel really bad for that poor piggy =( It's not your fault.

That is absolutely horrible! I couldn't even imagine. I'm so sorry, but you tried your best! The fact that they weren't solely in your responsibility means you couldn't control everything that happened. Maybe now that volunteer will know better...

I am so sorry that you had to experience that, but it was NOT your fault.
They are running a rescue, so they should have known how dangerous that was. I hope they learn from their mistakes!!!

I'v seen too many rescues that have said on their website 'can be rehomed/housed with rabbits'. For the poor animals it would be like a deer living with a gorilla, not to mention the piggy would probably end up dead.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. It sounded like you did the best you could to save the little piggies. If you had moved it again I'm sure they would have just put the bunny back when you were not there. At least they learned that's a big no no. But I feel bad for the poor little piggy and for you trying hard to save the little piggies.

Tried, and tried and tried. But the owner is a trainee vetinary nurse so she thinks she knows everything, of course.

Thanks everyone, I talked to the owner this morning and she said to put the rabbit back in the guinea pigs or I would have to keep it so...well...I suppose you know what happened there. Hehehehe.
