Ok I know this is kind of early since Im probally getting a guinea pig this september. But since I like to plan ahead, where should I get some guinea pigs. The pet shop or the SPCA. I want some healthy younger pigs. |

Definitely adopt a guinea pig from a rescue or the SPCA. Guinea pigs from pet stores are often from guinea pig mills. Mills are where people breed animals just for money and ignore there nutritional, shelter, and health needs. Go to www.petfinder.com and you can find guinea pigs for adoption at rescues and SPCA. Good luck on your search. |

If you'll read through the information on this forum, you'll see that we do not support pet stores. We support rescuing animals rather than purchasing them from a pet store. Purchasing an animal from a pet store only perpetuates the breeding cycle and condemns a rescue animal to death. Also, pet store animals are usually ridden with problems. I made the mistake of getting two of my piggies from a pet store. Wiggley wound up having abscesses under his neck that cost me 3 vet visits and a total of $120 to fix. Because they pressed against his vocal cords, he still can't wheek very well. I also got Narco from a petstore, and he was extremely sick (although I couldn't tell at first glance when I got him--a day later I could tell he was very ill). He had a URI. That was another vet bill of $46 to cure him. Animals that come from shelters/rescues have problems FAR less than those that come from pet stores. Take a look around the section of the forum entitled "The Kitchen." That should give you some idea of why pet stores are a bad idea. Here are a few links, also. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...-adopting.html http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...re-animal.html Please read these, and don't buy your future guinea pig from a pet store (which includes both major chains like PetSmart and small, independently owned businesses) |

You can build your own C&C cage very easily. There are step by step instructions on this site. Please don't ever buy from a petstore or breeder!!! Adopt your piggies when you get them!! There are guinea pig rescues in Canada too. Check your local animal shelter/humane society - they very often get guinea pigs in. Guinea Pig Home Listings - Adoptables Check here too. You can put your postal code in and search for piggies close to you. Also if you give us a GENERAL idea of where you live (southern ontario, BC, whatever) then maybe others on here can help you find piggies for adoption near you. |
