Lately my 1 year old boar Charlie has been trying to escape his cage. He actually suceeded once a few days ago while I was gone and he gave my mom a run about trying to catch him, he was running under the bed under the dresser, all over. Luckily he didn't try to taste any wires and was caught and returned to his cage. But after fixing the spot he got out which was on the bottom floor of the cage where one of the grids connect there is no top connector, he had either pulled it out of the bottom one or it got knocked out by a cat. But now these past few days he had been trying to get out. He keeps digging at the fleece and pulling it with his teeth and chewing on the grids and trying to pull them and lift them and stuff, which he wont be able todo since after the last incident I ziptied them all but I was wandering why in the world he would be trying to escape? The only reason I can think of is that he is used to freerange but its not like they have a small cage, it is a 2x8 + 2x4 + 2x2, there are pics of it in my gallery. And I know he is enjoying it because he is actually popcorning as I type, and he runs mad laps and does popcorns several times a day, I have no idea why he is doing this he never has before.

Re: Why does he try to escape? He might be bored. Does Charlie have a friend to play with? If not, you should find him one and he may not want to escape. Do you give him floor time everyday? Guinea pigs LOVE their floor time. I let mine run around my bedroom and they have a blast.

Re: Why does he try to escape? Ya he has a buddy, Chewie. They get floortime about 3-4 times a week, they have their own floortime room

Re: Why does he try to escape? Jenni he must think that it is a mistake that he is not free range anymore so he's decided to just let himself out!

Re: Why does he try to escape? Maybe it is because he wants more floor time than 3-4 times a week. Have you tried everyday? Maybe that'll work.

Re: Why does he try to escape? One of my guinea pigs, Dudley, does the same exact thing. He tries to pull away the fleece and then chews on the bars of the cube which blocks the bridge that leads down to the floor for floor time. They get floor time each night, but sometimes he wants out even longer or at times when we cannot offer floor time. It's definitely because he wants to be out. I felt bad at first when my guy started doing this, but if Charlie is anything like Dudley, then he will eventually give up on the chewing after he realizes he's not coming out at whatever time he feels like it.

Re: Why does he try to escape? I have a pig who is simply an escape artist. She's the one in my avatar picture. She never gives up trying to escape. It's not the general nature of our domesticated piggies, but some are just like that.
