Re: What does this sound mean??

DosLunas, first of all, are you positive both are girls? If so, then don't worry - it's just rumblestrutting. Females do it for dominance - especially when they are in heat. You might find your girls will try to mount each other when they are in heat as well. They can have their first heat when they are quite young, and what you are describing sure sounds like they are in heat. Write down the date you notice it and see if it lasts just a few days. Then see if there is a pattern. If it's every 16 days or so, then it's their heat cycle.

Re: What does this sound mean??

That's the sounds all of my guinea's have made when they're not happy about something. They especially do it when you get too close to their behinds or rub them in a particular way they don't like (my brother was rubbing against the fur on one of them and she made that noise). My guinea's usually make little squeeks when I pet them. As you learn the guinea pig's personality you kinda learn what their different behaviors mean intuitively and not all do the same thing.

Re: What does this sound mean??

My opinion on the matter, has strictly come from experience with boys... My boy pigs would make that sound and then the fighting would start, I think its a territorial thing. I could be completely wrong, but I found with my boys that was mostly it. It stopped when we separated them. When they were happy they never made that sound, just content little squeaks. And when i stopped petting one he was notorious for nudging my hand onto his head so he could get more ear-scratches... It could be completely different with females, or as stated above, high and low pitch gurgling sounds could mean different things.

Mabye its like humans saying "Hey" it could mean "HEY! NICE TO SEE YOU! " or "Hey... put down the carrot and back away from the food bowl"

Re: What does this sound mean??

Wow, all of the above helped me sooooooo much. I think the sounds are similar, with a small difference in tone. I do think they are in heat and rumblestrutting for dominance, as they are mounting each other a tiny bit. Also, I do not believe they were handled much when young, so my attention is new. I think they would prefer to be left alone, so am trying to pet them when they are eating their favorite thing. But, as stated above, when I go past the middle of their back, they make a similar, but different tone sound, witch I believe is telling me, they do not want me back there. So I am concentrating on their neck and ears. I hope in time, they will enjoy it and want it more. It is tough, as I know they just want the delicious salad and to be left alone. Thank you so much for your comments, it has truly helped me. They are delightful, but so different and I so want to give them a good home.
Thanks

Re: What does this sound mean??

It's pretty common for a piggie to disagree with you getting too far on their back. Once you get near their bottoms they start to whine as to say "Don't touch my butt!!!"

One of mine hates being touched any where below his neck, one likes any where from the neck down, and the other doesn't care at all. Crazy pigs!

Re: What does this sound mean??

It actually means displeasure, despite what everyone else thinks. It isn't even a peacefull noise, and when I hear it I get a sence to back off. A purr is like a soft, quite wheek type sound, though it is not a squeal.

The noise the pig was making can come from when they are in displeasure from either touching, or even an obnoxious ugly sound.

YouTube - Norton Purrs
the piggie in the clip is purring in the beginning, though not when he starts petting near his rump and makes that sound of displeasure again. Near the end, you can hear the piggie start to get a little frustraded that he continues to pet him there. It took me a while to find this, cause everybody think the sound of displeasure was a purr, and ti drives me nuts! haha.

Re: What does this sound mean??

I'm glad you posted that Frashy. My guinea pig was making that noise today and it sounded like purring...but with like bubbles...I'm not sure how to describe it, but I was dreading that the bubble sound was her getting sick again. She's never purred like that before but then again I've only had her 2 months so maybe she's just finally get comfortable enough with me.

Re: What does this sound mean??

Hmm..I think I might know what you are talking about, like with the bubble noise. You mean it sounds like the purring but like a chuckely bubbley type purr to it? Does she make the noise when you pet by her head kinda sometimes, or when she kind of wonders around the cage and exploring? That might mean she is curious.

Re: What does this sound mean??

I think you are right it is displeasure, because it sounds like displeasure!! So you are right on. But when they make the similar sound when alone in their cage, and occationally mount each other, then I think that is the rumblestrutting, dominance thing that clotho was talking about and are in heat??? Again, I am just learning and you guys know so much more then I do.
But, do they enjoy petting? Of course not close to their butts which they and this site has made very clear. They seem to be getting used to my petting their head and ears, but merely enjoy their favorite veggies at the same time. Is it my own personal pleasure that I am seeking to pet these guys? I have two, they are social, they have each other, a good home, lots of fresh veggies, etc. I am sure they are content and do not need affection form me, so, is it fair to force my ways on them, nicely. I hope this is comming across ok. Thanks for any advise
