? question

hello, i have two female guinea pigs i got one at a pet store(i fell in love when i saw her had to get her even if from a pet store ) well the pet store had males and females together (i think) well she is old enough to have babies. her belly is bigger (but that could also be i feed her better then the petstore) and her nipples got bigger but i dont feel "babies" in there but then i dont know what it feels like i have had her for a month and a half. how can you tell if you piggy is pregant? how long are the pregant before having the babies?

Re: ? question

When the sow is about 3 weeks pregnant, it is possible for the experienced breeder to feel slight swellings inside the belly. Each swelling represents a foetus in the womb.

A suitable method to feel such an early pregnancy is to place the pig with its front feet on a table lifting the rear end with two hands, one under each side of the belly. Place four fingers under the belly and thumbs on top, then press your thumbs gently downwards until you can feel from below. Stop pressing if you feel bowels or if the sow resists your examination. After a short break you can continue, and you'll soon learn to distinguish the different structures inside the belly; kidneys (just behind the ribs, usually only the left one can be felt), intestines (droppings are easily felt lying like pearls on a string) and the pregnant womb. Thoroughly feel your way through the belly from the middle outwards in all length from ribs to pelvis. After some practice you will be able to recognise smaller and smaller swellings earlier and earlier in pregnancy, the lower limit being about 3 weeks pregnant, where the diameter is like a five pence coin. Pregnancy swellings in early pregnancy are felt like tiny water-filled balls lying on a row on each side of the belly. Take care not to press too hard though.

Re: movement

I feel sad that you don't know what to do, Both of the links I gave above are FULL of information of knowing pregnancy Symptoms, Caring for pregnant Sows And analyzing normal and irregular PREGNANCY; and Delivery. Pregnant Sows needs more alfalfa hay and lots more of fruits and vegetables as the babies are now part of the diet. Density of feeds must be low but more frequent as it may make the pregnant sow stressed-out or feels heavy.

I encourage you to read more information and references about pregnancy, labor and babies on the Internet, Books, Private Cavy Individuals and specially Vets. Your sow getting pregnant without you expecting it is really a sad scene to see, there are lots of complications that awaits but counter part to that is enough knowledge, so keep on seeking for references and be sure to have you vet.

Keep us updated

Re: sound

I think she really is pregnant. If the two are really getting well and you see not a very active environment then there's no need for any of them to be seperated until the later and more delicate part of her pregnancy. Now is ever you saw them fight in the past and of knowing that the reason for the fight might happen anytime and frequently then separate them. If the Pregnant sow moves and plays too much, like running so fast in long time then you really need to separate them as this may do bad for her being pregnant.
You say you bought it 5 weeks ago? then . . .

Pregnancy lasts for approximately 10 weeks or, more exactly, 67-72 days

After about 9 weeks of pregnancy the birth ways will start opening, this means a bit much movement is a risk.

At seven weeks, The weight of the litter represents up to 45% of her total weight. Now it is definitely time to remove any boars, or even sows as and most (most doesn't mean all) sows will appreciate being left on their own.

In later days the sow will be very restrict of much movement as the weight increases, In this stage the sow must be eating and drinking well, if you see a little decrease, consult you veterenarian's, as this may be a symptom for toxemia. TOXEMIA DEFINITION and PREVENTION

Sow Labor Issues[u]
If you witness any of the signs listed below, get the sow to a cavy knowledgeable vet immediately.
>Sow straining for more than 10 minutes and not producing a baby.
>Sow bleeding
>Sow squealing loudly with each contraction
>Sow getting exhausted and just giving up from trying.
>No placenta being produced with the babies
>Sow smelling like nail polish remover, or acetone. This can occur from 2 weeks before until 2 weeks after the birth.
