Question Is this progress?

Ok, so I just got my pig a few days ago and she would not let me touch/pet her at ALL. she would always run and hide. I have been trying to let her get to know me and she will come take hay from my hand but that is all. I talked to another pig owner with much experence and he said that once u begin to start holding them they change and trust you more. So I got her out of the cage and sat with her during her floor time. I decided that I should do what he said and hold her so for about 20 mins I was trying to get her. Finally I did. I first she freaked but calmed down for a good 10 mins and let me pet her. Then she started squerming and I put her down. Later I did thing again and held her on my lap while petting her. When I stoped holding on she stayed there on my lap a few minitues while I was petting her. So my question is should I continue doing this daily or am I making it worse and more scary for her? It seems like its helping but I dont know...

Re: Is this progress?

You should do what you are both comfortable with. Guinea pigs are naturally prey animals, so running from "the big hand" when it comes into the cage is totally normal. If she sat there without being actively held and let you pet her, it sounds like things are going in the right direction. Food is ALWAYS a good motivator for pigs to start to like you, so you might want to give her some of her veggies during laptime as well.

Re: Is this progress?

Yes, the first time I picked mine up, I always gave them parsley or peppers (which they love) now the come to me when I go to the cage, mind you they still run away from the big hand, and I had them for 1.5 years!
