Cat Meets Guinea Pigs

As I was cleaning my bedroom yesterday my cat Charlie snuck in and was admiring my bird. The most he's ever done is put his paws up on it to get a closer look at her. She has a Macaw sized cage so there is no chance he could get near her as she is a cockatiel and quite small. I give her strands of hay to rip apart and noticed that Charlie was eating the hay. I thought it was weird and cleaned up the hay. He then walked over to the guinea pig cage, which is not cat proofed because my bedroom door is always closed. He hopped right into the cage, Smudgee paid him no mind and continued eating hay. Charlie was ready to jump out of the cage should one of the critters came near him. He does this when the rabbit chases him too.. He is scared of her. Anyhow. I was wondering what the causes for alarm would be. I don't like the idea of him being in the room or near the cages because he was a wild cat for two and a half years. I was more worried about transferring bugs and stuff though. Is there any cause for worry about bugs?
