Question fruits and veggies

Hi. I was wondering what fruits and veggies other people feed their piggies that they seem to like? My piggie only seems to like carrots. Any suggestions?

Re: fruits and veggies

Definitely try Romaine Lettuce, cilantro, and red peppers. All of those are particularly high in Vitamin C and other nutrients. Also, in case you didn't know, don't give your pic IceBerg lettuce.

Re: fruits and veggies

Cucumber is mostly water.

Dandelion greens, cilantro, Italian Parsley, Romaine/red or green leaf lettuce, spinach, green bell pepper, apple, carrot, bok choy, baby bok choy and Chinese Broccoli are always in my fridge. They love Dandelions and parsley, both high in Vit C.

Re: fruits and veggies

Mine goes crazy for carrots too. Unfortunately, carrots have too much vitamin A so you need to ration them 1 baby carrot per day. I usually cut 1 baby carrot into many slices and feed my pig one slice at a time so he doesn't suffer too much...

Also try endive lettuce, green leaf lettuce, parsley, apples, and green peppers.

Re: fruits and veggies

My girls LOVE honeydew melon, and it is pretty high in vit c. about carrots, my girls go nuts over them! i have to cut each one into 4 thin wedges so it seems like they get more.

Re: fruits and veggies

My 2 guys eat romaine, collards, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens, endive, chicory, dandelion greens, carrots, grapes, apples, cucumber, kiwi, red peppers, green peppers, parsley, celery, mango, cantaloupe, tomatoes, green beans, corn husks, fresh grass, and I'm sure some other stuff I have forgotten. They are definitely not picky. Keep trying little bits of new things and maybe try putting it in before you put in their other food (pellets, hay) and give them 1/2 hour or so. Maybe they will nibble on it because they are hungry and figure out they like it. They are so funny to watch when they eat because they systematically search through the bowls and pick out what they like the best and eat it first.

Re: fruits and veggies

In reference to gooddogs74 comment about how they pick through their food can someome recommend a good dish. My guys like to tip the bowl and sort through, and needless to say a lot is wasted.

Re: fruits and veggies

Yes, if the bowl is too high, they will tip it to get to the food. So actually with a shallow (heavy) bowl, less is spilled.

thanks critterlover. I am actually using bowls about 10" around and only 1 1/2"deep. I'm thinking about those metal small cat bowls, but they are awfully expensive. I'm also thinking that I just might have messy piggies, which seems appropriate

Re: fruits and veggies

Yeah, I agree. Those cat bowls are very expensive. I found some very nice ceramic bowls with guinea pig pictures on them (very cute) but they were $10 each (!) Even the plastic cat dishes are expensive. I mean, it's just plastic. I know it's heavy plastic, but still, $10?!? I use a child-sized tea-cup which is about 1 1/2 inches deep (same as yours) and it works well. But I only have 1 guinea pig so that's a bit different than your situation. There's a reason they're called pigs!

Re: fruits and veggies

My piggie goes mad for green beans! He'll do anything for them - he even jumps into my hands (instead of running away like usual) when he knows I have some. He also likes cucumber, carrots and tomatoes but he's pretty fussy about anything more exotic :-)
