Thumbs up Great news! My piggy's fine!

I breathe a HUGE sigh of relief right now. Just got back from the vet and Snickers received a clean bill of health. I was so scared that she might have caught the URI my other baby got. I wanted to get her checked out to make sure she didn't catch it at all. But she's fine, thank goodness! The cost for the check up was $43. Is this high? Or around the average cost usually? Also I was a little surprised- the vet didn't even know what a C&C cage was..... It seemed like she knew her stuff, but then again she gave me a brochure that said the cage size for a guinea pig should be at least 1 by 2 feet. ......Anyway just thought I'd update everyone on her.

Also, I realized I was feeding her alfalfa based pellets. And there's a lot left in the bag, but I don't want to keep feeding it to her, so what's the best thing to do? Could I maybe donate it to the SPCA nearby (that has guinea pigs)? Would they take an already opened bag?

Re: Great news! My piggy's fine!

Both the exotic vet and the normal vet charged me $45 for a check up, with medicine and any extra treatments (such as surgery) costing more.

Not sure what you could do with the pellets, but she should be on timothy pellets. Do you know of anyone with pigs under 6 months of age or that are pregnant? Perhaps you could donate them to the SPCA, so long as they know to only feed them to any pregnant/baby pigs that they may have.

A guinea pig visit for me here is $32 or $52 for both at the same time. But I'm in Iowa. Things like that seem to run cheaper here. That soundsl like a fair cost to me.

Re: Great news! My piggy's fine!

My gpig vet in Aurora Colorado is $42 per pig. I always bring a friend piggy for company, and I've noticed they tend to get a free once-over.

My other vet (emergencies & chinchillas) at Alameda East is really good about not charging for care that is follow up to an issue, and I think I've caught some breaks due to sympathy for bringing in some pretty sad looking rescues.

Isn't that the one on Emergency Vets? I frequently watch that show and am totally amazed at what they can/will do!

That's the one! Dr. Fitzgerald is so nice. He is amazing with the chinchillas especially. They get real quiet and let him do whatever to them.

The only problem with the place is going in after hours you don't necessarily get anyone who has seen a guinea pig before. It's hit or miss on the interns and such. I brought a chin there and it was pretty obvious they didn't know how to pick her up or hold her. They took her into the other room to avoid owner panic to look at her eye closer, and she came back looking like she had been through a war. Easy for a chin to look like that, but I was scared because I could tell she didn't know about their delicate ribs. She did consult with Dr. Fitz the next day though.

My twin sister starts an externship there in a few months. She is in her last year of vet school and is really excited about being there. You can bet she doesn't get away with not knowing about rodentia!

Honestly the bet guinea pig vet I have found in the area is Dr. Esposito at Aurora Animal Hospital. Cavy Care rescue/sanctuary takes their pigs there. Unlike some of the vets who claim to be exotics vets but really only have some book knowledge on pigs, she seems like she has seen a ton of them and treated a variety of issues many times.

Re: Great news! My piggy's fine!

My vet in Orlando charges about $49 for a visit. Usually discounted for each additional guinea pig.

Unfortunately I don't know any one else with any guinea pigs...... So I'll see if I can maybe donate it. Thanks.
