Unhappy Help piggy fell

I was putting my pigs back in there cage and I was trying to put them both in at the same time so I had one pig in my arm one pig on my chest/sholder and a pigloo in my hand (from floortime). The pig on my chest/shoulder fell probably any where from 2 to 4 inches and he isn't really using one of his back legs. There isn't a cavy savy (sorry about spelling) vet open now and the next time I can call is after school tommorow (unless there is a verry unlikly snow storm, which I am crossing my fingers for) which is around 3pm. Do you think he will be ok untill then? Also just incase they have to take xrays how much is the general price for them? I'm really worried. Please help!

Re: Help piggy fell

He has probably sprained his leg. How did he fall? Perhaps gently touch and move the leg to see if it causes any pain, that would probably be a good indicator as to whether or not it is broken.

In the future carrying one pig at a time would be smart.

I would keep your piggie has quiet as possbile until you can get him to a vet to have an exam/x-rays.

When he fell he landed on all four feet but it's possible that he fell on one harder than the rest. I will definitely call the vet tommow and get an apointment asap, I'm just so worried about him. Also I will never carry 2 pigs at the same time again.

Re: Help piggy fell

Make his cage smaller, and take away any ramps. Take away any objects that will make him jump. House him on towels (or fleece). Does he seem in pain? Do you have metacam?

Re: Help piggy fell

The price of X-rays will vary by vet, but he probably needs to have some done on that leg just to rule out any breaks or hairline fractures. In the meantime, do put him in either a separate cage (1x2) so he cannot move too much or just section off a space that small in your normal cage.

There are no ramps, he doesnt seem in pain he was lifting his foot and now sitting in his hidy house (this is compleatly normal) and what is metacam? He is with another guinea pig and I dont want to split them up if possible so how can I make the cage smaller?

Re: Help piggy fell

Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, you would need a prescription from a vet for that.

Re: Help piggy fell

I would separate them. I understand that you do not want to separate them, but by having another pig in with the pig that has hurt his leg they may play which wont really help his leg. So use left over grids, or something else, to separate them. Making a 2x3 for the healthy pig, and a 2x1 for the pig with the sore leg. They will still be able to see each other through the grids.

Metacam is a pain relief.

Re: Help piggy fell

If you have any cubes, just twist tie them together and then to the sides of the cage. They can still see each other but can't chase etc each other. If no cubes, do you have any wire racks, like for cooling cookies, that you could fabricate some kind of barrier that they can still see through?

Re: Help piggy fell

I acctually have a 2x5 so I can make a 2x2 for Parker (injured pig) and 2x3 for charlie (healthy pig). I do have left over grids wich I will be putting in soon. I feel terrible is there anything else I should do?

Re: Help piggy fell

Just keep him calm and quiet and you stay calm and quiet. He's going to react to your mood or anxiety. It might not be a good thing to pick him up until you go to the vet. Please keep us posted .

Re: Help piggy fell

I would be more inclined to keep him in a 2x1 rather than a 2x2, but it is your decision.

Re: Help piggy fell

2x1 is really small and most of the space in his 2x2 is taken up by hay and his hidy house. I probably can't get him to the vet untill Tuesday at the earliest because my mom is out of town and lets just say that my dad doesnt care for the guinea pigs as much as I do and my mom is the one who usually takes me to the vet with the pigs. Parker isn't walking funny anymore but I will still take him to the vet because I would rather be safe than sorry. One more question can I bring charlie to the vet to keep parker company or should I just take parker?

Re: Help piggy fell

Thanks Tulia&Susie. I forgot to mention earlier that I use a combination of fleece and towls. Parker is on the towls because that is where he was when i split the cage and I didnt want to move him.

Re: Help piggy fell

I have a big problem, my parents are refusing to take me and parker to the vet because they think that just because he stoped limping he is fine. I know that guinea pigs are great at hiding illnesses and injuries so how do I get my parents to take me to the vet? Even my mom wont take me. Do you think that I should still go to the vet? Please help I dont know what to do.
