Sleeping arrangements

We've had two guinea pigs (brothers) for about 7 months in a 2x4 c&c cage. They always have two pigloos and a tunnel, and until the past week or so, they always slept in one of those things. But lately, they're sleeping out in the open in the cage.

This first happened the day after we'd missed our nightly "clean under the pigloos" routine, which happened to be near 90 degrees (about 32 Celsius), so I figured either they were too hot inside or it was too smelly. But even after a normal cleaning routine was restored and the temperatures dropped significantly, they're still doing it fairly frequently.

I'm just curious if anyone has any idea if this is a normal thing - like, they're finally comfortable and secure in the cage and will sleep out in the open, or they're afraid of the pigloos all of the sudden (though they still go in them regularly, too!) or such.

(They also sleep with their eyes wide open, which freaks my husband out )

Re: Sleeping arrangements

My pigs actually did this same thing. I have four boys and, for awhile, they would only sleep in pigloos or under the ramp in their cage, but now they will flop down in the middle of the floor and take a snooze.

I think it has to do with the level of security they feel in the enviroment they are in. They have accepted your house as their home and they know they can trust you.

Re: Sleeping arrangements

I have noticed that on these warm days, my girls have been out in the open more. I think it might be to warm to be in the pigloos. My other 2 girls April and May will both sit inside their pigloos on hot days. I have been taking it out during the day, I'm afraid they will roast to death in there. A couple of my girls will sleep with their eyes open and some will keep them closed. I think in time yours will close their eyes also.

Re: Sleeping arrangements

Your pigs are growing comfortable with their enviroment and the bussle of your household. All 6 of my piggies prefer to sleep on top of their hideys rather than in them...so they can see what is going on around them I guess.

That kinda freaked me out at first too. I kept checking him to see if he was dead. That piggy likes to sort of lay on his side. The other one, Snowy doesn't usually. I have seen Snowy with his eyes almost closed completely a few times. Both of my boys will sleep where ever is convenient for them...even resting their head on their dish.
