Getting 2 piggies, help please.

Hi I have now finished my cage and have seen an advert for a 7 week male rosette piggie, he looks really cute and I would like to get him but obviously I will need to get him a male buddie. Do 2 piggies that dont know each usually get on ok? The cage would obviously be new to both of them so it will be neutral terratory. So with that in mind should I wait and get both of them the same time or would it matter if I got this 1 and a buddie for him a day or 2 after? The other lady that has some has rescues from young to older piggies, would it best to get the other roughly the same age?
Also (sorry I am so used to gliders but am researching piggies all the time) do male piggies scent? Would it be best to get them neutered? Any pros with males V females?

This is pic of the piggie I have seen...the cream 1 on the left

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Getting 2 piggies, help please.

He's so cute! What about the other piggy in the picture? They might already be friends. Is he available too? At that young age a day or two shouldn't matter although that baby will be more scared & lonely at first.

I would go with a young one just because it's fun to have babies in the house but that is only based on my personal preference, so why not go see the rescue piggies and see who you fall in love with? The cream piggy, is he a rescue? Be very sure that he is really a he before any introductions happen. See if you can bring Cream Piggy with you to get that verified. You don't want to adopt two and end up with six! If you go with an older piggy, the older one will probably be the boss at least until Cream hits puberty. Then they may have to discuss it again.

Anyway I am very happy that you are getting two piggies and they will be happy about that too.

Re: Getting 2 piggies, help please.

Thanks for your reply. The other one was a girl and has been sold, I dont think he is a resce just someone whos piggie has had babies. Iwill hopefully see the rescue ones tomorrow and may get one from there if the cream one is still available, if not I'll get both from the rescue. Is the rescue has a load together would I be better off getting 2 from there as they may have already bonded?

Re: Getting 2 piggies, help please.

If the rescue has a bonded pair, you'd be better off altogether. That would save you having to deal with intro's.

With sows you can pretty much introduce any age sows to each other but with boars it's a bit trickier. Neutering in boars only affects ability to reproduce and doesn't effect behavior. With boars it's better to have an older one and a younger one.

I would go with a bonded pair from the rescue.

Re: Getting 2 piggies, help please.

I went to the rescue although I would say they are more breeders than a rescue and there was 2 teddys and 2 long haired in the run. The silver teddy was being kept so that left the dark brown teddy and the 2 long haired. As I suffer badly from allergys I thought the teddy would be better for me. I was going to have a look at the abby like I mentioned earlier but the guy also had another 5 week teddy which he said would be ready next week and he would put him and the other teddy I have chosen together and see how they get on. So hopefully I will be getting them soon (maybe the weekend). Its such a hard decision as they are all lovely. I was worried if I bought the abby and then tried him and the teddy together and they didnt get I would be in an awkward situation. At least this way they will be put together 1st so if all goes well when I get them there wont be any robs. Any advice on Teddys would be appreciated.

If they are breeding, I wouldn't get any pigs at all from them.

Re: Getting 2 piggies, help please.

Tillie, we would all be happier if you looked on petfinder.com for real rescue piggies. If this guy is a breeder, his piggies probably have mites. They also might be pregnant if female. As far as teddies go, they seem prone to skin problems. I also found them to be less friendly but that could have been the individual piggy. There's a thread somewhere in this forum about that.
