scary noises?

I just brought out the new sewing machine I got for Decemberween and set it up on my craft table, in the room I share with my guinea pigs and my computer.

When I started sewing, Cupcake ran and hid like a little wussy, the way he does whenever I come near the cage and am not holding a veggie treat -_- Dante didn't care, he kinda just sat there and looked around.

So I'm wondering, is my sewing machine making too scary of a noise for my piggies? I don't want to damage their health with stress while I'm sewing - especially when a lot of it will be for them - but I really don't have anywhere else in my apartment where I can put them, or do this.

Any thoughts?

Re: scary noises?

Mine got used to my sewing machine really quickly. My machine is not too noisy.

Re: scary noises?

They will probably get used to it. My house is always loud... 2 kids running around pushing tonka trucks, tv blaring, yada yada. The pigs have gotten so used to it they never acknowledge it.
My vacuum cleaner is pretty loud, that I use to clean the cage with daily, and they have gotten so used to it now that I have to keep them shew'd away or they will walk right up to the hose trying to sniff and nibble it.

Re: scary noises?

hehehe that's pretty funny Our apartment is generally very quiet, there's 2 adults and 2 pigs and 2 ferrets, I'll occasionally play music in the room, not too loud, and they'll "sing" along if they're happy ^_^

I just went really slow with the machine, and it seemed less scary for Cupcake.

Re: scary noises?

I'm sure he'll be fine. Our apartment is pretty quiet too, just two adults and three pigs. When we first used the vacuum, they were really scared, but now they are fine. Most of the time, they just sleep through it, or keep eating, not the slightest bit of stress. When we use the dustbuster, they are a little more scared, but not too bad, as Eleanor has come up to sniff it before. I think as long as they know they are secure and safe, they will get used to it and not be bothered.

Re: scary noises?

They'll get used to it. At Christmas when my girlfriend was testing our new toaster oven my mother got us. The bell sent Smores running across the cage and ducked for cover. He did it one more time but now he's fine with it. When I first had guinea pigs 2 years ago, storms would set them off and now nothing. They get used to it.

Re: scary noises?

My pigs are like 3 feet away from my sewing machine. They used to hide, but now they like the sounds of the machine I think, because they come out and popcorn. I think they like it because I'm hanging out with them without trying to touch them with the big scary hand.
