DOG BISCUITS? I have just been watching TV, a piggie owner said she feeds her piggies dog biscuits as it helps to keep their teeth from overgrowing. Is this safe? Does anyone else feed dog biscuits to their piggies? Jenny -uk- 8o

Re: DOG BISCUITS? I wouldn't feed dog biscuits to your pig. As long as your pigs have a constant supply of hay their teeth will stay trimmed.

Re: DOG BISCUITS? i agree with briana D. the store bought dog biscuits have too many ingredients that aren't really healthy even for a dog. if you've got time on your hands you can do a bit of surfing on the web for sites that have great recipies for home-made biscuits for piggies made from wheat germ or whole wheat flour. that way you know what your piggie is eating won't hurt'em

Apple twigs as alternative Branches/twigs from certain fruit trees can also be used as a 'chew' object. I use apple tree twigs that I purchase from a local farm. They usually just chew of a big of the bark and some of the inner piece. Be careful, some fruit trees are poisonous. I know apple is OK. Also, tree shouldn't be treated with pesticides.

piggie cookies Here is a recipe for piggy cookies I got off of www.theguineapigrescue.com I haven't yet made any myself but going to very soon. Piggy Cookies For special occasions and holidays bake your piggies a treat with the following recipe. 1 small carrot, pureed 1/2 banana, mashed well 1 tbsp honey 1/4 cup Guinea Pig pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder 1/4 cup ground oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder Mix pureed carrot, banana and honey in a medium bowl. Add pellet powder and ground oats. Mix until blended. Knead in your hands for 1-2 minutes. Roll out the "dough" in 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick layers between sheets of plastic wrap. Cut into small cookies (about 3/4 inch across). Place cut shapes onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes (check to make sure they are not browning too much). Turn off the heat and let the cookies sit in the warm oven for an hour or so. Remember this is a treat, do not give every day. original recipe from House Rabbit Society
