Question Long haired cavy care????

I found an ad on petfinder for 2 long haired males. I have never had long haired guinea pigs before and i am hesitant to start now. I was wondering how often you have to brush them and how much extra care they require. The woman stated that one has a mat in its hair but otherwise they are healthy. Still haven't made up my mind on them but I thought I should be some input before I decide what I want to do. Thanks for any help.

Re: Long haired cavy care????

I just got some more information on the pair. They seem to be brothers under a year old (hopefully they are sexed correctly) The owner says she has never brushed them because she didn't think she needed to They come with what she calls a good size cage but i am thinking that it will probabley be too small since she dosen't seem really well informed.

Re: Long haired cavy care????

I don;t have long haired pigs, but their hair is supposed to grow about one inch every month. You can trim their hair so that it doesn't get all messed up with food and bedding and poop. You can trim their bum hair more often since it will probably tend to be the messiest.

You can brush them so they don't get mats, but you may end up just having to cut out the current one so that you don't hurt the pig.

Re: Long haired cavy care????

You just give them haircuts every once in awhile, especially their bum hair.

Bathing might have to be done more frequently too, my 2 long-haired almost white girls get baths about every other month.

I don't always brush mine every day, but I do 'finger-comb' them quite frequently.

Re: Long haired cavy care????

I have long along hair and the care it receives other then my short haired piggies is as follows:
  • Get trims when hair gets longer
  • Gets brushed more often
  • Get butt baths more often
Other then that it isn't too much difference.

To add to that, I have to give my three longhairs butt trims just about every other week because other wise their butt fur will get really wet and stay that way. They somehow manange to pee on themselves just about every day.

Re: Long haired cavy care????

Some long haired pigs will get matted hair if not brushed or finger combed daily. I have a silkie who gets mats in her hair no matter what I do it seems. I comb her hair daily and keep her bum trimmed short. The mats are usually just small ones on her lower belly or back legs but if the hair gets matted close to the skin, it can be quite painful for her.
