How do I know if my guinea pig is pregnant? Help!! I think my guinea pig is pregnant, but I don't know for sure. I need to know the signs of a pregnant guinea pig. If any previous owners of pregnant guinea pigs could tell me some signs or symptoms that they saw in their pregnant g.p. I would greatly appreciate it. I have searched several sites but have found no information. Please help!!!!

Re: How do I know if my guinea pig is pregnant? A couple of signs of a piggie being pregnant are: 1. she'll frequently drink more water than usual 2. she'll eat more than usual 3. slight change in behavior (dosen't like to be touched alot especially around the belly area) 4. as the pregnancy proceeds, you'll notice she'll take on a pear-like shape. when she starts to look like a pear, you'll want to handler as little as possible, but still be there to interact and supervise her. you'll also want to increase her vitamin C and her hay, as the babies will recieve all the nutrients they need from their mommie. you can also give her alfalfa hay too (for the babies),so they'll get the calcium they need as they grow and when they start to nurse (even though they'll start to eat alittle solid food and hay on the third day). hope this helps you somewhat.

Re: How do I know if my guinea pig is pregnant? yeah, she'll loose alittle hair around the nipple too, also you'll notice right befor she goes into labor, her nipples will begin to produce milk and get alittle plumper and her plevic bone will begin to widen alittle. when her pelvic bone,; which you can feel near her vagina; (about an inch above the opening) is open wider than the width of your thumb, you can expect her to go into labor about anywhere from 12 to 24 hrs from when you first notice the opening. she'll most likley go into labor in the late afternoon or at night when its quiet. at the sign of labor, you'll want to give her as much privacey as you can but still be ther if she needs your assistance. its been such a long time since i had a piggie who was pregnant ( i was 9 going on 10 when my uncle got me my first piggie for my b-day, she had 4 piggies about a month after i got her). how old is she? if you do know, since piggies that have never given birth before they are 7 months will have a difficult birth. its not to scare you, but what happens is if the piggie hasn't given birth no earlier than 5 months and no later than 8 months, the pelvic bone starts to fuse together making delivery impossible and you'll have to take her to a vet to have a cesarian done, which puts the mom and babies in danger.

Re: How do I know if my guinea pig is pregnant? Thank you so much for all the help, its really informative and helps a lot. My guinea pig who I think might be pregnant is going to be 3 months old on July 25th and no she has never given birth before. I got her when she was about 5 weeks old and I think that she may have become pregnant before the age of 5 weeks, seeing as I don't have any male guinea pigs. Is this possible, to become pregnant at such a young age? At times, she looks pregnant and then she doesn't. I don't know whether she has just had a weight gain, or not. But her belly feels like it's going to burst when I touch it. I don't feel any bumps that might be babies though. Thank you so much for all of your help mommacavy!!

Re: How do I know if my guinea pig is pregnant? I would suggest you take her to the vet immediately. You need to confirm that she is pregnant because if she isn't it could be a serious medical problem like bloat. Get her checked out immediately.

Re: How do I know if my guinea pig is pregnant? vita's right, even though there might be a slight chance that she might be pregnant (if she was kept with any males before you got her), it might also be a case of bloat, which is a very serious and even sometimes fatal illness. put it like this, its like if you had the worst kind of gas in your stomache and you feel as if you're gonna explode and not taking anything to treat it, that's how a piggie feels with a case of bloat. a well informed vet that knows about piggies will check her out and let you know if it is bloat or if its babies she's carrying in her belly. although if she is preggie, movement will usually be felt within the last 2 to 3 weeks of the pregnancy. P.S: your welcome aubrey

Go here cavycages GuineaLynx www.cavyspirt.com Also, if ANYTHING goes wrong during pregnany and especially if she goes off her feed, take her to the vet. Don't even bother posting here. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
