I had to take my Emmett to the vet today. I thought he had a bacterial GI problem and have been medicating him with Tribissian and acidophilus since Sunday but he didn't get any better. When he turned down a fresh cucumber from the garden I knew I better take him in instead of just talking to her over the phone. He's getting x-rays now and maybe a blood test later. All the vet could see was his teeth were jagged. Poor little man he is just 3 years old. She thinks he may have renal failure. Wish him luck.

I went a visited him at clinic and the x-rays showed he had a lot of gas in his GI tract. So he is on pain killers and a drug to help his bowels to get working. They are also giving him acidophilus and fluids. The vet thinks it could of all started because I feed him a grape and the sugar in it upset the good bacteria in his GI tract. It is still touch a go. She is not sure he's going to make it. Now I'm afraid to feed the other 2 fruit. An old female died a few years back because I feed her apple. So I do not offer apples. Maybe Guinea pigs are to fragile for me. I try to be so carefull and still end up making them sick.

Healing vibes to Emmett and hugs to you. Don't blame yourself. You do the best you can. I feed mine grapes and have never had a problem. But if you are uncomfortable with them, fruits aren't needed they're more of treats.

I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Don't go blaming yourself Emmett, you do your best for your pigs, and clearly love them. I too lost a pig, and felt terrible guilt that it was perhaps something I had done - but these feelings are not productive. If nothing else, your post has warned others not to feed too much fruit - I know I have cut back on giving fruit, since joining this forum, and now, will be even more cautious.

Will be keeping you and Emmett in my thoughts - do let us know how things go.

I called Emmett's vet and he is doing better. He's still not pooping very much but is eating his hay and running around. I'm going to visit him after work and bring him more hay.
I'll keep you all notified on his condition. And again thanks for all your concern. It is very much appreciated.

It's not good. The vet called this morning to tell me he had seizures this morning and is still not pooping. She thinks he has a blockage and the fluids they have been giving him are pooling in his stomach and causing an electrolite imbalance.
The vet just called and Emmett has passed. She said there was nothing I could of done to prevented it but I still feel so bad. I'm sitting here at my desk crying. It's a good thing the director just left. Why do we love the little creatures so much?

Animals just break your heart.

Oh, I am SO sorry to hear your sad news about Emmett.

Take comfort in your vet's words that there was nothing you could have done to prevent it. Let your tears flow. When my Midge died, I rang my boss in tears - she understood - she had lost a pet herself. I suppose we love the little creatures so much - because they are so loveable, and because we care. The world is a better place for people like us who feel pain, and care.

We love them so much because they love us unconditionally. I am so sorry to hear about Emmett's passing. I was really hoping that he was on the mend. Just know that you gave him a wonderful home and did the absolute right thing getting him to the vet for treatment.

My pigs and I will keep you in our thoughts.

I can tell you loved him very much and took very good care of him.

He is gone physically, but he will live in your heart always.
