Sick Pig

My 1 year old guinea pig, Clyde, seems to be sick. I noticed 2 days ago that he wasnt real active. He stayed in the back of his pen most of the time and wasnt real interested in treats. Today I took him out and checked him over. His eyes were really squinty(no gunk in them, just real squinty). He didnt try to run around or do anything...he just sat there. I pressed on his tummy and that didnt seem to bother him. I looked at his posterior and it looked like he had some carefresh bedding impacted so i pulled that out. I have been watching him and I dont think he has eaten anything today. He shares a pen with another guinea pig, Moe, and Moe seems to be fine. Hes eating, responding to me, running around. Its just Clyde that seems to be ill. Do you think it could have been the impaction or do you think it is something else? And if it was the impaction, will he recover?

Re: Sick Pig

take clyde to the vet right away. when a piggie refuses to eat and seems lethargic, that's a sign something isn't right. I'd mention the impaction that clyde had to your vet, that way he can tell you how to clean him out (males usually suffer from impaction more than females). and also check his "giggle stick" (if you know what i mean, *wink, wink* ). sometimes when a male is cleaning himself down there, loose hair can sometimes get caught around it, and if it isn't cleaned, can cause an infection. so it's always a good idea to give him alittle check down there once in awhile (incase hay or bedding is stuck in his butt). hope this helps, and let us know how he's doing =0).

Re: Sick Pig

Vet now!

Check here for impaction information - www.guinealynx.info/impaction.html

He could have a UTI, URI and many other things. Pigs hide their illnesses very well so when you notice they are sick you need to act fast!

Good luck.
