Hey, guess what? Nobody's perfect! Ly had an editing mistake. She didn't then go whining and complaining about how mean everyone is for complaining about her grammar. Everyone's going to have a misspelling, a miscapitalization, or whatever. Try your best and don't intentionally do that crap to flout the rules. |

It is so silly to me. It isn't like making a few capital letters is going to take you days, and days, it is a matter of a few seconds or less. I am curious, if you are over it, why are you still ranting about it? No offense, but I wonder. I actually did look up the word dictator, and it is:"A ruler with total power over a country." This website isn't a dictatorship. You are allowed to post what you want, there are just rules. Like there should be. I am not meaning to single you out, this is to every member in general. If you don't want to get infractions, then comply with the small rules this forum has! If you don't follow the rules, then you should not complain when you get an infraction; you are basically planning on it if it is a mistake that you have the power to fix. Just doing a little more venting. |

Ugh, seriously? We're going to compare Natesmom2244's post with Ly's itty bitty typo? Life can be obnoxious enough without anyone adding to it. It's not hard...capitalize each sentence, try to spell correctly, use proper grammar and punctuation...basically, use what you learned throughout your K-12! Oh yeah, and then ignore the insignificant typos. It's what nice people do. |

Chatspeak belongs in places which are designated for fun, not places that people learn in (whatever the subject-english to guinea pigs). Considering this forum is about educating people about proper care for cavies, I would think chatspeak shouldn't be here. Not all of our members are American/English and speak fluent English, so proper speech allows them to more easily read...I'm sure if I was new to the English language I would not appreciate having to figure out what "r" and "u" meant while I was trying to learn. Maybe I'm just weird. |

Katiewilson- Totally don't get your post. I didn't, nor did I intend to, compare anyone's post to Natesmom. In fact, funny enough, I didn't even mention Natesmom. I saw Ly's obvious typo as a bit of ironic humor in a thread about proper grammar etc. |

You want to know something funny? I wound up reading a site where a lot of British kids were using chatspeak. And some chatspeak only makes sense if you speak the dialect it comes from. They were typing "4t" and I couldn't figure it out--then I realized that since they were pronouncing "thought" as "fort" it made a lot of sense to them to spell it 4t. But I'm an American, and it had me completely confused. Did you know, in China, they have only one writing system for the bazillions of different dialects? Mandarin sounds very different from Cantonese, but they can communicate because they have a common writing system. |

Oh yeah, and then ignore the insignificant typos. It's what nice people do. Exactly! Which is why people complaining about mods being so mean is just downright obnoxious. The only thing worse is when others point out each teeny little typo. There is a GIGANTIC difference between chatspeak and minor typos that we all do as humans. It's not ironic to have a typo when addressing a serious abuse of the written English language. |

I don't mind the notion of chatspeak in some places (like text messages), but I think it should be banned for all people under 20- even in texts, IMs and the like. America's teenagers are spending so much time using that crap that as a result their written language skills are dreadful. They often don't even know the difference between 'our' and 'are' because everything is 'r', and don't realize that 'nite' isn't a word. The grammar and spelling skills of some teens and young adults is enough to make you want to weep. I don't expect people to follow some of the more obscure grammatical conventions but geez, if it's a plural then there's no apostrophe before the 's'!!! If English is your first langauge, and you went to elementary school in the US, then there's no excuse for: "Your a cool person" "I'm going too the store" "My fish ate it's dinner" |

AMEN! I hate texting myself. I would much rather speak to someone. I don't really use chat speak because I hate it. HATE IT! The only ones I ever use are LoL, or (only if I am using the chat room here, or using AIM) BRB (be right back). Sometimes I do have a mistake like with Your, and You're, or with there, their, and they're and with to and too. And sometimes I miss a letter in words, but I try to correct it. |

I consider myself a lazy person sometimes, but if anyone is reading this right now who actually is lazy enough to not properly spell, capitalize, or punctuate a sentence, then I don't think you need to be typing anything on a public forum at all. Instead, maybe go back to kindergarten and ask your teacher why you have to say things and write/type things the right way. Also, when someone types in all capitals, for example, it is taken as shouting. There is absolutely no reason to shout on this forum. Shouting is rude, and genrally considered inappropriate in most indoor settings. This place is "indoors", so use your inside voices. All lowercase is so annoying that the reader can't focus on what has been typed. There needs to be a mixture/blend of upper and lowercase letters in order for printed or typed words to be easily legible. Everyone is different when it comes to spelling skills. Sometimes, children even have to help their parent(s) spell certain words. But everybody, regardless of actual spelling skill, does in fact posses the not-so-amazing ability to try as hard as possible to correctly spell every single word they type. And, people can also read what they typed before they click submit reply, so they can spell-check their own "work". That has a level -10 difficulty, and takes what, like 5 seconds to do? Posts on here aren't that long at all, so the need for robo-spell check is non-existent. Grammar is generally quite simple, in any context that it would ever need to be applied in this forum. No excuses here either not to try your darn hardest to use only proper grammar. If you can't, log off, buy a life and log back on afterwards. Also, in my opinion, anyone who harasses the mods on here needs to grow up and get a freaking life! You obviously care nothing (or very little if anything) at all about your piggies care if you think moderating for sake of truthful information is ridiculous. The mods are just doing their job, like anyone else could be doing, anywhere, at anytime. They help make sure that we don't do stupid things with our guinea pigs, and they make sure that the wrong people don't get in here, and so on, and so on. All for helping us people take better care of our piggies! And like I said, if you think the mods are bad or whatever, then I think you could be a terrible guinea pig owner, and I'm sorry for your cavy(ies). Well, I'm done! Some people are just so distasteful and bleh! Hoorah for the mods. |

If someone has learned English as a second language, I have no problem with any spelling or grammatical mistakes, no matter how egregious. English is a very difficult language to learn as a second language. We have more exceptions to our spelling and verb conjugation rules than most other languages. Switching from an easier language to English is pretty remarkable and I completely accept and expect any errors in usage that may come with it. |

Still, how can you tell (even the spell-check can not detect wrong topic of the words)? Of course, without a private message respond to the mods. And I know some that are obvious, but some I can not detect. Have you ever thought of making a sign option, like a little tag where the member can write the English level they are at, or if English is or is not the mother language? And honestly, often we find that people who speak English as their second or third language make fewer mistakes than those who were born English speakers. Why? They pay attention to what they are doing and take a moment to reread their posts before clicking the "post" button. |
