lifespan

most books i read say 5-8 years, however some say 7-10, and a man i talked to in a petstore said his piggy lived to be 13. 5-7 seems like such a short amount of time to have a furry friend, and i was wondering if these statistics/facts were accurate with any of you guys, or is there hope for a longer life with my 2 guinea pigs?

Life Spans

I think, as much as we love our furry friends, we have to come to accept the concept that they don't have a very long life span. The life span of a hamster is generally 2 years. Rabbits live up to 8 or so. So I would guess that guinea pigs are about 5ish. But these are just averages. There is no reason that guinea pigs and other animals couldn't live beyond their expected life-spans.

I prefer not to dwell on it too much. I'd rather think about the time I spend with my pig. Just enjoy the time you have together.

lifespan

My guinea pig, Puzzle lived just a bit over 6 years. He had a tumor and was doing fine until it suddenly seemed that he was in pain and had difficulty walking and i had to make the painful decision to put him to sleep. It broke my heart, but I knew it was the most loving thing I could do for him. During his life he received lots and lots of love and attention (not to mention good eating) and he lived a great life, actually longer than I had expected, due to his tumor. I suppose quality of life probably has a lot to due to length of life. Lots of love and care must have an effect on length of life.
