Ok, so I took my guinea pig to the vet today to get her nail's trimmed and saw a sign for a free guinea pig. Well, I want to adopt this boar so badly and can adapt my cage for two pigs but wondered if a divided cage is safe or would frustrate pigs? I've read the pros and cons of netuering but am confused because the owner's boys "got tired" of them after a year and I want to take him but am hesitating. I guess my final question is is there a certain age boars need to be neutered (this boar is about 1 1/2 years old)? |

Well some people have an okay time with boars and sows being in the same cage with a divider. Other have the boars chewing on the bars all the time. I think it just depends on the pig. I would really look into getting the pig neutered. That would be the best option in my eyes. Remember to quarantine though, since you don't know what this new pig may have. Keep him in a separate cage in a different room for a three weeks. And always wash your hands after handling the new pig. With the quarantine though if you decide to get him neutered it would be perfect since you have to keep them separate from the girl for three weeks to a month (I'd do a month to be sure) to make sure the sperm dies. |

If the boar is otherwise healthy, 1 1/2 years old is fine for a neuter. I just recently had Percy done, and he was over 2 already. If you decide to adopt this little guy, and you can afford the neuter, I would definitely say go for it. Check with your vet and see if they will give a partial discount since the sign for him was up in their office. Worst case scenario, they'll say no discount, but it can't hurt to ask. |

It would be so sad for him to spend his life on the other side of a grid all alone. Doolittle adores his womenses and I have never regretted neutering him. I am a bit confused as you said boys. Are there two boys for give away? What do you have at home? If you have nothing but boars then why neuter them? If you have a sow, you still can't put but one boar in with her because when she comes in heat the two boars will fight even though they are neutered. One boar for all the sows you want. All sows or all boars. Doolittle has 7 ladies. If I got another boar I would have to build another cage. |

Judy I love that fact that you use the word womenses. |

I'm sorry that I confused you. There is only one boar but the owner has two children (or so I understood from the phone call) and that's what I meant. Sorry about that. I have one sow and would like to find her a friend. I believe that I have decided to wait and adopt another sow in the near future. I just don't think I'm finanically stable for two pigs and a neuturing right now. I would really like to help this pig but I want to do the best thing and if I am hesitating than I probably shouldn't do this. Thanks for all of the replies in this thread! |
