ok so one of my piggies has this scar thing and its a perfect circle. It looks like maybe a cyst or something but when i squezed it it cam out and it smelled bad. In its place is dark and looks like there is more stuff in it. I have no clue what this could be. She had it since ive gotten her back from her adopted mother. I will bring her to the vet next week when i get paid. Another question is she now thinks she a boy, shes tring to hump the girls and makes the boys bummle sound. I know shes a girl because she had a baby and has tetes. Help! Desi

Re: what is it?.... It sounds like an abcess. The vet will be able to drain it and give you antibiotics. That's a dominance sound she's making. Completely normal.

Re: what is it?.... Could be a ruptured abcess, an infected bite, a spider bite, infected ringworm or mites (from scratching), a cyst. There are too many possibilities so it's good you plan on taking her to the vet. If you are unsure about the sex then you should seperate her until your vet can sex her and make certain.

Re: what is it?.... If it's puss-filled it's most likely an abcess. There's usually something causing the abcess, such as a bad tooth, or a wound that did not properly heal.

Re: what is it?.... Sows will mount other sows and rumblestrutt just like boars do. She's most likely in heat if she's doing that. If she had a pup, she's definately a sow. Boars have nipples or teats just as sows do so that's not any indication of sex.

It is like that with all mammals, dogs, cats, humans. It sounds like normal behavior to me. I wonder though with an open cyst or other sort of wound if you should separate her, any puss that drains off may be infectious to your other pigs. Last edited by VoodooJoint : 06-28-06 at 10:21 am. |

Re: what is it?.... Ok, I found what I was thinking of, there as a type of bacteria, called Cervical Lymphadenitis, it is very very contagious once the abscess is open, I would isolate the pig immediately, and make sure you wash your hands really well after handling her. Here is a thread on GL about one CavyCage's members struggle with this condition: http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24617 You should probably move this discussion over to GL's medical forum if you can.
