Looking for a rescue service in the St. Louis area

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board and have picked up tons of great ideas already just from browsing around today.

Growing up I owned a number of guinnea pigs over the years, and now my wife wants to have 2 guinnea pigs in her classroom this year. I've seen "rescue" operations mentioned on this board and was wondering if there were any such operations in the St. Louis area. I would much rather rescue a couple unwanted piggies rather than buy them at a pet shop...

Thanks for the advice!
Kev

Most rescues won't adopt out in to a classroom setting. It just doesn't work. If you still want to try or get advice about why this would just not work I'd check with a rescue near you www.cavyrescue.com/rescues.htm

Re: Looking for a rescue service in the St. Louis area

hi,

I have a rescue around st.louis. all my info is wrong on cavyrescue.com...new phone new -mail but my address is the same. It is called Happy Hearts and I'm soon to be overrun with piggies. I just rescued a pregnant sow and i got two more last night that are a few months old. But in all good conscience, I can not adopt any of them out to a classroom situation. I first got interested in guinea pigs in the classroom but I also saw how the other students were with them. I can't do it. There is a humane society branch up there too although I have rescued some pretty sick piggys that started out there.

Classroom Pets

My friend's mother is a kindergarten teacher. I've been to her classroom and checked out what animals she has there. She has lizards and fish. I asked her why she did not have a guinea pig or a hamster. She told me that having a rodent is against school policy. Rodents supposedly harbor parasites like fleas, ticks, and lice. We all know that those parasites have to come somewhere; they don't just appear out of thin air and land on pigs. I just wanted to throw that out as a note. Be sure to check with your school's policies before having animals in your classrooms.
