Question I have an older guinea pig...

Hi there,

I have two guinea pigs. One I've had for 5 years now. She is give or take a month or two about that old as well. I also have another that is a couple of months old. They get along great! They cuddle with each other and play around. Everything seems to be fine regarding how they get along. My older guinea pig has recently began acting slightly different. She has lost some weight but seems to be eating normally. I have monitored it regularly and seems to be eating just fine. My younger guinea pig squeaks loudly, thats just her personality but recently my older guinea pig has started to squeak just as loudly and has begun chattering her teeth, even when she is in the cage by herself! She has always been such a loving pig and I don't really know what to do! She seems as if she is a different pig! Is there anything I can do? Thanks so much!

Re: I have an older guinea pig...

It could be puberity. (sp?)I'm not really sure. She/he also may be letting the other pig know ," who is boss". I know that Charlie and Moe, my two boars, had a very strong dominance issue in the beginning but once Charlie put Moe in his place things went fine. I don't know about the losing weight part of the whole thing. A Mod or more experianced member probably knows more than I on the topic. I would suggest looking on Guinea Lynx on their medical page,I think their is a section on losing weight. This is the link;http://www.guinealynx.com/. Hope I helped!

Re: I have an older guinea pig...

Does she have any symptoms of ovarian cysts? These include hair loss, enlarged or crusty nipples, weight loss in the shoulder area and perhaps widening of the hips, PMS-y behavior, rumbling or humping cagemates, and vaginal discharge.

If you're at all concerned about her hormones, you should take her to a good vet and have an ultrasound done.

No she hasn't had any of those symptoms. Just the weight loss. It's really quite odd. She seems happy other than that and then she chatters occasionally now.

You should take her to a vet, maybe they could figure it out. Weightloss is a pretty serious issue.
