Question Mites

I feel so stupid. My rats have been itching and getting scalely like you see with mites on the GP's. I looked up on the rat site and they can get mites, lice the same as the GP's. The treatment is the same. Ivermectin. The rat site even gave the dosage. The rats and GP's are all in the same room.
I did all of the GP's about 2 months ago. Since then I have adoped several more GP's. Should I redo everyone including the GP's? My Sammi that is 8 weeks old, should he be treated also?

Re: Mites

I would definately treat the rats and it probably wouldn't hurt to treat the pigs again especially if you haven't treated the new ones. If Sammi isn't 12oz or better, he cannot be treated. Pups must weigh at least 12oz.

Re: Mites

Just curious, what can you do for a pig under 12 oz with mites? Do they just have to suffer until they are big enough? Or is there an alternate treatment perhaps?

Re: Mites

I haven't found an alternate treatment through gl. It's just too dangerous to give it to pups under 12oz (approximately 340 grams). Most wait until the pups are at the appropriate weight then dose them.

Re: Mites

I began using revolution on my pigs in March. It is much easier than using the ivermectin. One drop behind each ear and one on the back takes care of the bugs. It is even supposed to be very safe for newborns (one drop only). Has anyone else tried this?

Re: Mites

That sure would be easier on the rats. Could I use it on the rats? Is it for mites? I did use it once for lice on the GP's. Kitten formula.

Re: Mites

I was told it kills all internal and external parasites on piggies. The person who gave me this info has been using it for over two years on all ages of pigs. I'm not sure if it can be used on rats though.

Re: Mites

As far as I know, most local shops don't carry, Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. They must come from a vet. You can buy these from vet catalogs such as Drs. Foster and Smith and Jeffers. Over the years Jeffers ha gone up so much on their shipping that they aren't worth looking at anymore. They used to undercut everyone.

Suzi, I don't know which rat group you are on, but a lady in my chin group also has GPs and rats. When she had to deal with mites, some man told her about the Ivomec and also told her it was safe to use the 8 in 1 spray in the cages when she cleaned them out.

Re: Mites

You can get a 3 pack of Revolution for Kittens here for $25.00. That's a pretty good deal. https://www.vetshoponline.com/index....ct_id/5074.htm

Re: Mites

All of our local petshops carry Advantage. Frontline and Revolution need to come from a vet or vet supply. I got mine from my vet. They looked at me funny when I said I wanted it for my piggies, but they didn't really question it. I got the three pack of the large dog size.

Re: Mites

Ok, revolution can be used on rats. The dosage is .10mL/ once a month. Use the kitten one. One dose will kill the mites. Can be used monthly or when bugs are seen.
