Mange Mites and Cavies

One of my boys started losing his hair so we took him to the vet. The skin test came back negative but after consulting with you, I discovered that many times those tests show negative even when Mange Mites are present. Well, I am treating all 6 of my piggies with oral ivermectin that is diluted from horse paste. I used the charts and information on this site and weighed all of my piggies for proper dosing and had my vet check my dosing to ensure it was correct. The piggie actually showing symptoms of mites is being treated by injections from the vet. The other piggies I'm treating. Anyways, our dog started losing his fur too so we took HIM to the vet. Skin test came back negative but he too, is being treated by injections of ivermectin from our vet. So, all of our piggies and our DOG is being treated.....Here's my question....
Do I need to take my CAT to the vet to get treated as well? Can cats get mange mites too??? I don't want to treat all of the other animals and then have them become reinfected by our cat!!! So, can cats get mange mites? AND if so, can I just weigh her and treat her orally like the other asymptomatic piggies???? If I can treat her orally, is there a chart that goes higher in weight than 4 lbs so I can get a proper dosage for her????
Thanks for your help,
Whitney

If you need to have your cat treated, do it by the vet. Don't give the cat ivermectin yourself. I have no clue what the proper dosage would be. Unless your cat has had direct contact with the pigs, it may not need treatment unless it's showing signs of mites.

Re: Mange Mites and Cavies

My cat hasn't had direct contact with the piggies but neither did our dog and he has them. The cat HAS had direct contact with our dog who has them though. She's showing no signs but neither are the other piggies I'm treating. I guess I'll just wait and see if she ever shows signs. If not, she should be fine.
