Baby's Weights

My Babies are 2 months old. I just started weighing them... My girl, Cailin is 181g (?6.335oz) but my boy, Chet is 259g (?9.065oz) & in the last 24 hours Chet put on 9g & Cailin only 1g. Does anyone know if this is normal? I'm going to keep weighing them daily for this week & then probably weekly after that! Should I be giving them any extra or give Cailin any extra food or could it just be that she was the runt of the litter & slow to grow?

Re: Baby's Weights

i'm not really sure if that exact weight change is normal, because i dont weigh my guinea pigs daily (i think i should though..) but i do know that males are supposed to weigh about a pound more than females usually do. that should explain the difference in weight gain. In a reference book i have, it says that baby guinea pigs will gain a tenth of their weight (which is usually 4-5 grams) daily until they are 5-6 weeks old.

Im not sure if that confused you, but what i'm trying to say is that 259g compared to 181g seems to be a normal male-to-female weight ratio. You shouldn't be worried about this unless Cailin stops gaining weight for a long period of time, or if either of them start to lose weight.

hope this helps!

Re: Baby Weights

Thx blossom622

It's good to have some reassurance I'll keep weighing them daily this week each afternoon just to see how things go & weekly after that. I think they are actually only about 6 weeks old... they were 3/4 weeks when I got them & that was 3 weeks ago

I wish I had been weighing them earlier but it never occured to me until I read it on here somewhere they both look happy & healthy & they *love* their parsley

I've now got them on a proper guinea pig pellet (instead of a mix I bought from the supermarket with fruit & stuff in it... before I knew they should be avoided 8o ) I'm trying to always have fresh hay in their cages & I pick them fresh grass from my yard usually twice a day as well as whatever f&v they get twice a day

Hi Mom

thx I'd love to see your Cujo! How old is he? You should be able to get a scale like that from any kitchenwares shop... It's just a basic kitchen scale or "diet scale" as it says on the box! I actually gote mine as a freebie with a recipie set I was collecting

Cujo is 4-5 months old and he's such a sweetie! Purrs and kisses all the time. If I can ever figure out how to post a picture I will, but he really looks alot like yours! Thanks for the scale tip.
