Re: Piggy food plan

You can read LilSweetys thread http://www.cavycages.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16489.

Guinea pigs need 10-30 mg/kg of vitamin C not calcium. Too much calcium results in stones. The most tomatoes you can feed a day is 1-2 grape tomatoes per pig, because these cause mouth sores. Only one baby carrot a day per pig, and cucumber can be fed every other day.

This is taken from the Common Misconseptions about guinea pigs thread, posted by cool-cavy-crazy.

Guinea pigs must have at least one cup of fresh vegetables each day each. Good veggies to offer daily include:

Lettuces - all types but iceberg (contains mostly water and very little nutritional value), Good lettuces are Romaine, Green/Red leaf, butterhead/boston, curly or belgian endive, raddichio and others.
Cilantro (coriander)
Peppers - all colours, no seeds
Baby carrots - one small/medium per pig or same equivalent of regular carrot.
Chard, Red or Swiss is most commonly preferred
Zucchini (Courgette)
Corn husks and silks
Cherry/grape tomatoes (no more than 1-2 per pig)

Good every other day foods:

Parsley
Celery - chopped up small plus leaves
Cucumber
Broccoli leaves
Dandelion greens
Green beans
Summer and Winter squash (all varieties)
Chicory Greens

Some fresh foods should be limited to twice per week:

Fruits - apple, plum, apricot, melon, cucumber, peach, grapes and a few others.
Cabbage
Broccoli
Herbs such as Dill, Chives, Basil, Mint, Thyme
Collard Greens/Turnip Greens/Mustard Greens
Kale
Spinach (in small amounts)
Asparagus
Beets
Brussel Sprouts
Cauliflower
Sweetcorn on the cob
Pumpkin
Turnips

Other foods, such as radishes, banana, sweet potato and beet greens should only be given as occasional treats, say once or twice a month.

Vegetables are important to provide essential vitamins, and if provided with a good variety of fresh foods daily, there is rarely a reason for supplements of any kind to be given.

Re: Piggy food plan

Sweetspice, I will tell you upfront right now that you cannot make your own mix for cavies to eat. They need a good quality PLAIN PELLET only and no mixes, no grains, no bits, no seeds, no little dried veggies, etc. Why don't you read the thread for a diet plan that your friend LilSweety posted. Since there was already a thread on the same subject, you should have asked for help on that thread and not made another for the same thing. Personally, I feel you are not ready for a guinea pig unless you do major researching before getting one. They are not cheap pets and must be provided with quality pellets, hay and lots and lots of veggies.

That is a very POOR diet.

Also please stop posting in all purple. My eyes cannot take it anymore.

Re: Piggy food plan

That's it Sweetspice, you are going on a 3 day vacation for outright ignoring my warning. See you when you get back. If you write in all purple or any other colors again after you come back, I will ban you for 2 weeks. I don't like my warnings being ignored.
