What do I do? I bought two female guinea pigs about a month and a half ago. I did my research before hand, and made sure that the woman selling them in the store had properly sexed them. I also made very clear that the females I purchased were absyinnians not long haired (peruvians?). However, as they get older( they are about 6-7months, i think their hair is getting longer and longer. I would never take them back, and I love them very much. However, if they are long haired can I trim it to avoid matting and to keep their coats cleaner? Information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: What do I do? Of course! they'll hate it, but it makes things easier, especially on the butt when the hair gets all matted and peed up. It's easiest to do it after a bath. Also helps to have a partner help you out, because some pigs hate the sound of scissors. I'd say don't cut it until it gets super long though, like dragging on the ground, over their eyes, etc.

Re: What do I do? Peruvians look like abbys when they are born. They get their long hair as they get older.

Re: What do I do? I have a trimmed up Peruvian, she hates having her hair cut, but she seems happier without all that fur and she really doesn't look any different after. Of course, I can't help but leave her hair long on her head and cheeks...it's so cute! Also, not having to deal with her piglocks around the butt area is nice.

Re: What do I do? We have an adult boar abby and he has a very bushy butt. . I'm thinking that after reading about pee/matting etc, as well as male impaciton, that a butt trim would benifit him, thoughts?

Re: What do I do? Most definitely. If by bushy you mean matted, then it's something you should have done a long time ago. Dory&Flo - go for it! And also trim the frontal ("fringe") so they can see better and doesn't annoy them.

Re: What do I do? My girl Tina used to love getting a big trim. It's not a big deal and you only have to do it once a month or every other month, depending on how short you want it. Also, it's very humorous depending on how you cut it and watching it grow out.

Re: What do I do? Actually I'm a bit of a shocker when it comes to giving one of the longhaired pigs her trim - I love to give her layers and funk her up a bit! I think a longhair pig would be perfect for a professional hairdresser.

Re: What do I do? Talking of trims, my Tuppence needs a bit of a trim today too. She's got curly bits all over, which makes her look really daft. Anyway, welcome to Cavy Cages, Dory&Flo! As well as regular full body trims, you will probably need to offer regular butt trims too to prevent pee and poops matting the hair. Looking forward to seeing pigtures of your piggies!
