Albino Guinea Pigs

I was just wondering how often Guinea pigs come out albino or white with red eyes, Our 2 guinea pigs breed and it was accident imbreeding, we were wondering if it had to deal with the imbreeding and how probable it is to have 3 baby guinea pigs like that.

Re: Albino Guinea Pigs

What breeds are your parent pigs? Also, have you separated the parents? Mom could be pregnant again a few hours after birth if you haven't.

Albino's don't count as a breed - they are called PEWS, or pink-eyes whites. You can get pigs with ruby eyes too. I don't know the chances of the pups being PEWs; I haven't studied genetics to know the chances.

Re: Albino Guinea Pigs

It depends on the parents. If they are roans or dalmations they could result in lethal cross (blind, white, deaf, dental problems and extra toes). Inbreeding any breed of cavy can also result in genetic deformaties such as these.

Re: Albino Guinea Pigs

There are no such things as albino cavies, only red eyed whites and pink eyed whites. That page has a little on it

Re: Albino Guinea Pigs

Spencer's got ruby eyes, but he's white and grey agouti. Isn't it fairly normal to have PEW's or REW's? Because albino just means the pigment is mutated or something... I think... Or something like that...

Re: Albino Guinea Pigs

Albino defined means- Having pale or colorless skin, eyes, and hair because the body does not produce enough pigment.

White pigs with ruby or pink eyes are not called albino's, but PEW's or REW's. Himilayans are white pigs with dark ears, nose smut, dark feet and ruby or pink eyes. I have a himi but her 3 black feet all turned white over the summer and her nose smut has faded but she has really pretty pink eyes.
