Thumbs down I have a little problem.....

My Dad is obsessed with the space in the garage, or what space there is. I already have a 2x3 C&C cage and a 5' x 2' store bought cage with additions on it, with three piggers. I'd like to get another pig or two, but I just don't have the ground room (or the money to get a fancy shelf! to fit another cage) Does anyone have an idea for an inexpensive shelf thing? Or a cheap way to create more space?

The C&C cages are the cheapest way I can think of for you to go. If you don't have the funds to build the cage bigger, maybe you won't have the funds to get the extra veggies more piggies would take?

Can you give me the brand of this huge petstore cage? I am most interested in the brand because there aren't very darn many petstore cages that large.

Re: I have a little problem.....

Sorry Ly&pigs, the cage itself is only 2ft x 3ft, but I added a large portion of cage space onto it. I wish there was a petstore super cage though!

Um, I don't think it was about not being able to afford a C&C, it is looking for a cheep way to build a shelf to put the new cage on... As store bought shelves can be rather pricey...

I need to sleep on this one Sweetywheety... I I will keep it in mind. Do you have a corner location? Is your Garage finnished inside? Concrete? Does it have wood studs?
What kind of material are we working with here... What is your idea of "cheep"?
What needs to fit under the shelf? I am still thinking about the actual shelf design, but one thing to consider is that the cage could overhang it a bit if you secured the cage to the actual shelf, with either zip ties or that metal corner edging you can buy at hardware / building stores...

My Mom and Dad will pay for veggies, but they don't understand guinea pigs like I do and won't buy cages for them. They think they are boring, but cute. I have spent $300 on GP's and just don't have anymore money to buy more cages. My Dad and Mom think I shoudn't spend so much time on guinea pigs and think that they would be fine in a small cage with hay and veggies. But I try to tell them piggers need room to live! Still, I'm stuch purchasing cages, piggers, and everything else. There is also the matter of space. My dad keeps the garage open and orerly. He just DOES NOT want it filled with guinea pigs. So sad, so sad......

Re: I have a little problem.....

Thanks Cavies-and-kids, your help is EXTREMELY useful. My garage is concrete, and nothing has to fit under the shelf, except food, maybe. I know it's difficult to come up with something when you have my budget, but nothing over $40-$50. I spent my life savings(kinda) on the piggers. My allowance is $5 a week. Truly sad, i know.

Re: I have a little problem.....

Could you stack another C&C on top of your current one? I have a 3 level C&C right now with 2 2X4's and a 2X3. The bottom 2X4 is a pain to get into right now since I had to seperate the boys temporaily on the vets orders, but once I can take out the divider it should be no problem.

If you try thrift stores or even freecysle/craigslist you may be able to gather the materials you need. Voodoojoint made a cage for all of $7. With a bit of creativity you can come up with osmething for $40. Also, try to hit yardsales, you never know what you will find at a yardsale.

Re: I have a little problem.....

Hmmm... I think with $40-50.00 we can come up with a shelf, but is this the budget for the cage too? Voodoo had a good cage she built for $7.00? on the cages threads, using recycled materials. Maybe this the way we need to look, even if you don't have all the materials hanging around, often at building stores they have scrap pieces you can buy on the cheep. Customers come in, buy a 4x8 sheet of plywood, have it cut to a 4x4, and leave the left over piece.

However, I think it is important to consider that the more pigs you have, the more likely you are to run into medical problems. Will your parents be willing to shell out the $$ for a vet if your pig gets the sneezes and a crusty eye? If not, then you perhaps should develop an emergancy fund first before purchasing more pigs. How many do you have right now?

Re: I have a little problem.....

I second the emergency fund. I had a close call with Spinel's abscess. Luckily I had a friend to borrow some cash from from a week. But being younger then I ( I am assuming you are in high school) your friends probably don't have full time jobs and don't have money being saved up for things that can be spared for a week.

Luckily for me my friend still lives with his parents. He is saving up for a really nice place.

Re: I have a little problem.....

Hi Sweetywheety,

Is it warm enough for your little piggies to be out in a garage?
Would your parents allow you to bring the little guys into your room?
I have mine in my bedroom and it's really wonderful to watch and interact with them often. And maybe in your room you might be able to find more room for a bigger cage. (?) Just a thought.
Debbie

Re: I have a little problem.....

It is VERY warm in the garage. For one thing, I live in southern California, so it doesn't get THAT cold. Our garage is also insulated and has carpet down where the pigs are. I'm trying to persuade(sp?) my Dad and Mom to get my piggers up in my room. Dad thinks pigs are messy and thinks they're fine outside. Mom doesn't like the idea of them in my room because my room is kind of small, but they would fit. I have another post on fleece, so if I can get mom to get me that then I can rule out the mess problem.

Re: I have a little problem.....

I am sure you know this, but in both the sticky thread "cavy cage superstar" and in the galleries are tons of pictures of C&C cages with fleece. It may help make up your moms mind if she can see what they look like, and how popular it is with us here!
