when adopting a second pig I really want to adopt a buddy for my guinea pig. I have considered the idea many times, but my parents are really concerned. They are afraid that my male pig wont get along with another male pig (getting him neutered is out of the questiong). If that were to happen, I wouldn't be able to house them seperatly. My question is when you guys adopt 2nd and 3rd pigs, how do you know if the pig will get along with yours? Do you take your pigs to the shelter and see there if they get along, or do you take a chance and adopt one you think is cute and return it if things dont work out with your other pig. Also, do you think my cage would be big enough for 2 male pigs, I have a 2x3 cage with 1x2 upper level.

Re: when adopting a second pig Is it possible to expand your cage? Space is key. Have two of everything, 3 if possible. How old is your boar? Is he pretty easy going? Have you seen http://www.cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm#Introductions and http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2972 ? What part of CA are you in? I would go through a rescue. They usually have lots of experience matching piggies. I would go with age and personality rather than looks.

Re: when adopting a second pig He would do well with a baby boar probably. Fenella can probably hook you up with a nice pig. http://www.weecompanions.com

Re: when adopting a second pig We got Mr. Pigg a little buddy to play with this January. He had been very used to living alone after 3 1/2 years without someone, and it took us about 8 wheeks to get him & Junior to live together peacefully. But it worked well, and the two boys are the bestest of friends now. Most shelters have a 30-day policy, and even taking 3 wheeks of quarrantine into consideration, that gives you 9 days with the two together. No I would not bring my piggie to a shelter, for the same reasons you quarrantine a new pet. You will probably know within those 9 days if the two are just taking awhile to get used to each other, or if they absolutely can never live together. I'd talk to the shelter before you adopted, and just explain what you're doing. I would look for a baby boar... it's what everyone recommended for us, and it worked well! Yes, they will have issues, but they'll sort them out & your piggie will be ever so much happier that he has a buddy

Re: when adopting a second pig I have 3 males. Two were adopted *because* they were cage-mates from Cavy Spirit Rescue. My other male is disable, but has an over zealous attitude. I have placed a couple grids in the cage to separate him from the other two. They still like to visit through the grids. But there is no fighting. You have more luck getting a very young male and introducing him to your present cavy. I am sure one of the rescue shelter would be of great help to you.
