Wood

Another question... Sorry for being so annoying!

I am planning to build a run for outdoor time, and was wondering what would be the best wood to use, as I know some can be harmful to Cavys, and some just arn't suitable.

Re: Wood

DONT use cedar!! I kow that cedar shavings for bedding can cause URI's so I presume a run made with cedar would be just as bad! I think somewhere I heard pine was bad too. If you go with wood, I'd use aspen or a form of hardwood.

Keep in mind though that all wood is porous and will collect bacteria etc etc. If you do build with wood, you may want to line it with coroplast or linoleum so it's easy to clean.

I was going to mention something like this as well. Are you trying to build a cage like thing to leave outside, or just an enclosure that's safe for your piggies? If it's just an enclosure, you can get lengths of plastic garden fencing that can be washed and sterilized if anything gets on them.

Re: Wood

I would use grids to make a large run before I used wood. Wood can harbor bacteria and other gross nasty stuff. Cubes can be zip tied together and then somewhat folded for storage when you're done.

Re: Wood

No it's just for outdoor time, not all the time. I hadn't thought of plastic or grids. Thankyou!

Re: Wood

Please let us know how it turns out. Sometimes it just takes talking plans out loud to get all of the details and ideas straightened out. Good luck with the building.
