Re: Help If you got him on Saturday he is not eating because he is scared. When a guinea pig goes to his/her new home it takes a while for him/her to settle. Is there somewhere he can hide? Put the food in there, he should feel more confident to eat. Also, does this guinea pig have a friend? Guinea pigs need to live in pairs, at least.

Re: Help Does he have any symptoms, like sneezing, irregular breathing, runny nose etc.? If you got him from a pet store he could be ill - it's not unheard of by any means. What foods are you offering him? Does he have many hidey holes? Do you plan on getting him a friend? These things all make a difference to how the pig behaves in the new home.

Re: Help First of all, posting in all capital letters is the equivalent of shouting. We don't post in all capital letters. Secondly, we don't use chat speak on the forum. Also we post using proper capitalization and puntuation and try to spell the best we can. Please read the posting rules on this link and follow them. Failure to follow the forum rules can get you temporarily banned. http://cavycages.com/forum/announcem...nouncementid=7 You have had the pig for four days now, if he is not eating, you need to start handfeeding him right away to ensure he gets some nutrition. See www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html. You don't mention hay at all, he needs unlimited hay at all times. The 8-in-one food you are feeding is a pellet mix and is not good for piggies and that particular brand is one of the worst you can give to your pig. You need a plain pellet. You also need to feed a variety of veggies daily. Please read this link to get you started http://guinealynx.info/healthycavy.html.

Re: Help How is your pig today? Have you tried leaving a few veggies in with him overnight to encourage him to eat? I think it's Vitamin C your pig needs, not B12 - feed red peppers, an orange slice, cilantro and parsley to get some Vit. C into him and then introduce other foods to him (although hay and plain pellets should be available at all times).

Re: Help If I didn't have much knowledge about Guinea Pigs, and mine wasn't eating... I would have been upset too just like you. : ( The one huge *positive* thing is that you have a wonderful new little guy. And you can give this little guy a great home. The next step is learning as much as you possibly can about these wonderful little creatures. They are the sweetest creatures around... even if your's was classified as a "mean boar". He will need a buddy. They can actually die of loneliness, isn't that so sad? One of our little guys might be classified as a "mean boar", which in fact he is just one overly busy little guy, but he was constantly bugging the other piggy. After dozens and dozens of tries to have them live together we finally put up a grid divider to separate the cage. He can still visit with his buddies, and he does his rumble strutting, and sleeps next to his buddy, but there is a grid. He is a happy little guy who does lots of popcorns. Check out the cool cages that were built my members on this site. They do not cost that much and they are fun to build. Your new little guy is going to need a cage where his little feet will not get hurt. Feeding your little guy the proper foods is another area that you will need to have knowledge about. Remember they have to have foods high in Vit C, and not just Timothy Hay and pellets. You can give them slices of oranges, but you would be surprised just how many veg there are that have vit C in them. Like red bell pepers. I am glad that your guinea pig is now eating. I understand why your teacher mentioned vit B12. It supposedly stimulates the appetite. He is depending on you completely to meet all his needs. And in return you will learn to love this little guy so much. Good Luck with your sweet little guy. You sound like you are a caring person who wants to do the very best. Debbie

Re: Help I remember when I first got my pigs - I freaked out at everything! I'm glad your pig is okay, Rodents_TX! If you can find them, you should feed your guinea pig Oxbow brand or Mazuri brand pellets. Even better, you can order some pellets (and hay) from Kleenmama. By the way, when you said your cage was 2x6, is it 2 feet by 6 feet or 2 cubes by 6 cubes? Just curious!

I also highly recommend you change the pellets you are feeding your Guinea Pig. The pellets you are currently feeding are a very low quality and if they contain seeds and colored bits then they are also a choking hazard. None of this is being said to be mean to you or complain. It's being said to help you take better care of your pet, educate you on proper G.P. care and help you post properly and learn the rules of this forum. |
