| I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) I just got an email from the animal control where I adopted my one pig. They say that they are legally not allowed to help once the pig is adopted. I am so upset, I don't understand and think that this just perpetuates the myth not to adopt from animal shelters, as they may be sick. Dear Amanda, Thank you for your e-mail. Sorry for the delay in my response. I checked with our Veterinary Technician and she is legally unable to treat animals once they are adopted. She does think that both Guinea pigs should be treated. You should take them to a Veterinarian for treatment. I am sorry we could not be of more assistance. I hope this information has been helpful, please feel free to contact us again if you require anything further. |

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) The shelters here give you a certificate for one free check-up after you adopt, and Sheltercare program gives you pet insurance for a few months. See if you qualify. Sorry, but that sounds reasonable and normal. AC's usually have low funds. They cannot afford to treat animals at all usually. I wouldn't have said anything. If you say they got lice from there, they may put down all their guinea pigs. The piggie is in your care now. Just get some ivermectin or Advantage. It costs under 40 for a box, I think. Parasites are common and easier to treat than most illnesses. |

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) I pretty sure Revolution also helps with lice. That's what they gave Tomoy when they weren't sure what was bothering her, but were sure it was along the lines of lice/mites/fleas. |

I am sure that this shelter is not going to start euthanizing all pigs and rabbits over this, there a rescue they work pretty closely with that would intervine, the animals have some very good advocates. Just looks like I am going to have to go the vet route, and you are right, I should be greatful it is just a parasite, and not even the worst kind at that. Just really makes me rethink ever adopting from them again, I think I will go threw a proper rescue next time. Regards; Amanda |

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) Well, no matter where you adopt a pig from, or any animal for that matter, you are going to eventually have vet bills. If you can not find over the counter meds, take the pig to the vet. Having some money set aside for emergency is what I do. That way, I can just take them! Shelters are the best place to adopt a pet. They get killed there. At a reputable g-pig rescue, they do not uthinize their animals. Of, course they are going to have an issue sometimes when you adopt it, but adopting it is part of the reason to save it. You are getting it treatment, and a loving home. Plus, I got my g-pig from an excellent shelter, where he was treated for mites. But, it did not clear up, and I had to go back and re-treat him several more times. There is no guarentee, no matter where you get your pet from. Quote:

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) That is to bad! When I adopted my pig, the shelter gave me a "free health-care" check-up certificate. I used it in a different county as well. Very few vet offices where I live will turn them down.
Quote:

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) Shelters tend to suck around here when it comes to post adoption problems. I e-mailed THS letting them know my sow was a boar and they never got back to me. A simple sorry would have been nice. My last shelter adoption was done through the rescue lady in this area. that way I had someone who knew the system with me. He still had spurs and chipped tooth and hadn't had his sac cleaned out in forever, but he was a he! |

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) I am starting to calm down, however I find it hard when so many people talk about just getting meds, and they are not available just like that up here. I understood with adopting that I was getting a living breathing animal who would require vetrinary care, and I am going to do what needs to be done. That is part of owning an animal, many people would just return the pig and get their money back, I could do that, but I am not going to. I just think that they should treat for these sorts of things before adopting out. They do not give free health checkups, and sheltercare is not available. In the end, I am glad that I have given her a place to live, and what needs to get done will get done, but I think it is understandable I am going to be less than thrilled about this, and I think it is poor management on their part, as treating them does not cost the shelter much, but will cost the people who adopt a small fortune, vet care is very costly here. Many people will not bother and will complain to friends and families that the animal they got was sick, perpetuating myths about animals at shelters being undesirable. In a few days, when this is all calmed down, and I can be rational about it, I think I am going to contact the shelter to see if there is anything that can be done to correct this situation for future adopters. I am looking over the info on Revolution, and it does look promising! My cat is due for a check up soon, I am thinking about boosting up that date and just getting Revolution for her and with the help of those on GL dosing them myself. I have a lot of experiance with mixing solutions to specific concentrations from school, and as a mom, I can make a pretty mean frozen orange juice from concentrate! Ok, that was a joke, honestly, not the true extent of my experiance! I think I will be ok to do on my own if I can just get my hands on it and have the guidlines. I appreciate any help or advice that is given. |

| Re: I am really upset now. (Relating to post on Lice) He actually was in a bigger cage then his quarantine one. I was shocked. I used to have the same cage but it's in Windsor right now. I offered to volunteer to clean sacs and check feet and teeth through that lady. Edit: They used to charge $5 for small animals. City council voted in the $21.50 fee. And were those kitten not the cutest things you've ever seen. There were 6 in the window all pawing at us when we walked by. |

I really think they do try, I was reading a link about them from the Rabbit Rescue lady, and it sounds like they got slamed with pigs this summer. Right now it is rather quiet, and they are still overflowing... Did Rabbit Rescue adopt him and then you adopted him from Rabbit Rescue? |
