Thumbs up Veggies per day

Its always mentioned that piggies should get veggies every day, fruit every other day etc and a little alfalfa in their normal hay, but to be honest I am finding it a little confusing as to what veggies you give them every day.

What veggies do you give every day, every other day and once a week etc?

Re: Veggies per day

Every day, your pigs can have:

Lettuces (any types but iceberg)
Cherry tomatoes
Chard (not easy to find in UK)
1 baby carrot per pig
Peppers
Coriander
1 parsley sprig per pig
Kale (in small amounts)

Every 2-3 days:

Fruit - apple, melon, cucumber, grape etc.
Babycorn/sweetcorn
Celery (chopped up)
Cabbage
Broccoli
Cauliflower

Alfalfa should only be given to pigs under 6 months old along with Timothy or meadow hay, but a very small amount once every few weeks won't hurt pig over 6 months.

Re: Veggies per day

Every day I usually give my pigs romaine lettuce, red lettuce, and Boston or green lettuce. Then I give them pepper, cilantro, and a baby carrot. I then give fruits every couple days. cavy-cool-crazy I will have to try chard. Do your pigs like it?

Re: Veggies per day

They love it! The only time they had it though was when I bought a packaged lettuce mix with chard in, and I haven't been able to find it since. But seeing as how you are in the US you should be able to find it a bit easier!

Veggies every day yes, fruit every other day, no. Fruits should be fed a couple times per week due to high sugar contents. Alfalfa should only be given to cavies under 6 months and to pregnant or nursing females in addition to the grass hay. If you don't have pigs prone to calcium issues or calcium stones then some alfalfa very occasionally will be ok.

Re: Veggies per day

So far I give Lois a small bowl of Romaine with a slice or two of bell pepper when I get up. I also give her a small slice of apple every 2-3 days.

I honestly don't know much at all about skinny's or baldwins, so I can't answer that question. Maybe someone with good skinny knowledge will be able to answer that Ruby.

Re: Veggies per day

I feed my pigs twice a day. In the morning they get their greens. They love the letteces over cilantro, kale or collard greens. They like parsaly but I don't give it maybe once a week.
They get veggies at night. A red pepper every night, then I give cucmuber, tomatoes, green beans, zuccini squash, (they don't like yellow squash). I try new veggies all the time so they don't get bored. I tried Jicama in small amounts and they inhaled it. I give carrots once a week. I don't feed spinach or the gassy veggies.
Fruit, they love apples, pears and melons.
Hay, I got a bale of burmuda grass and alfalfa mixture. My neighbor has horses and he let me take a few flakes of just bermuda grass. When my young guys are over 6 months I will get a bale of timothy. My girs are big hay eaters, the boys eat it but the girls outdo them every time. Hay is unlimited.
Good luck with your piggies. It's fun to try different veggies and such to see what they like best. Mine definately live up to thier names. They are Pigs.

Re: Veggies per day

If you are talking about "skinny pigs" then no, they don't need alfalfa after six months, if you mean a thin pig, yes, malnourished pigs can have alfalfa.

Tomato is a good everyday food. It dosen't cause mouth sores like some people believe (per Lynx) I know she feeds a wedge or 2-3 cherry tomatos a day. Mine go nuts for them, but some pigs don't like them.

Try red or orange bell peppers. They're higher in vitamin C and a little sweeter. Maybe Mr. Piggs would like the brighter prettier peppers.

Re: Veggies per day

Nismo has established that he does not like cucumber or tomato, he'll nibble and never touch it again. I'm trying to get him to eat lettuce, but he won't eat romaine, he's eaten others now though. I bought a bag of mixed greens without iceberg and I don't know the names of the lettuces, but he'll eat different ones except romaine, LOL, crazy pig. He INHALES corn husk and silk, when I give him some you'd think he was starving or something :P, and loves green peppers and carrots.

Re: Veggies per day

Peanut absolutely loves tomatoes and both of the girls love orange, romaine lettuce, pepper, hay, grass, carrots, and other foods of course. Can anyone tell me what are the best veggies to feed their pigs daily. I give my pigs romaine lettuce and pepper daily, but I want to know others, please. They get fruits and carrots once or twice a week. And other veggies when we have them.
