Are these suitable units for a cage?

Hello everyone! I'm wanting to make a c and c cage for my piggies, but I'm trying to find some pig-safe cubes for them, as I've been reading on the squares being big enough for their little heads to poke through. I don't want to end up getting something that's going to harm my piggies! So, I was looking around. Target isn't safe, Kmart's the same way, and some of the Walmart ones have boxes with the big holes and normal-sized ones. So, I was thinking about getting these from Sears. What do you guys think? Stor Floor Standing 6-Cube Storage Unit - Tools - Garage Organization & Shelving - Storage HooksStor at Sears
Another option is Bed, bath, and beyond Grid Wire Modular Shelving and Storage Cubes - Bed Bath & Beyond Grid Wire Modular shelving and storage I like this one because it comes with the shelf separator that I can always zip-tie to add more space.
And then this one, Walmart's Whitmor Black Wire Storage Cubes - Walmart.com Whitmor cubes

What do you guys recommend? I also don't know how many boxes I'd need. I have two guinea pigs, and I'd like them to have plenty of room, but I also need to add a top to it because I have curious cats!
Also, I've seen a lot of people using fleece. Is that a good idea? I would like it to be easy to clean, but also comfortable for Sam and Dean.

So, I just need to know which ones of these would be the best to get. I'm thinking Sears because I can use an employee discount, but I also want the most for my money!

And if anyone can recommend a good set-up, let me know! I'm still trying to figure out a decent layout for it.
    Thanks, everyone!

Yes all of those grids are safe. How much room do you have to build a cage?
For the top you can use grids or wire closet shelving. Here is how to build a top: Tops

Fleece is very good, I use it and love it! So do my piggies. Here is a good link to fleece review http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...-study-24.html

Sears would be your best option. There are 23 grids in that box. If you go with Walmart, there are only 17 grids in the box, and BB&B 19 grids in the box.

For the layout, browse through the gallery to get ideas. There are many ways to setup the cage.

Sears and Kmart sell the safe ones by me. Did you go to the store and look at them? Both sell the 9 space across ones here.

Both the Sears and Bed Bath and Beyond cubes seem safe. I bought one package from BB&B and I had enough to build my 2x4 cage with 7 grids left over (Including the shelf seperators, which you could just use as grids.)
But Sears has the most in a package, and you have an employee discount, so I would buy those.
I just started using fleece a few months ago and I love it! It is way less expensive than bedding, especially with bigger cage and very easy to spot clean with a dustpan and broom or mini vac.
Make sure to check out the link on fleece @xXMaggieXx gave you, as it is very thorough and informative.

I bought one box from the Kmart in Bloomingdale IL and it had all 9 space across the grids. The last ones I got, I bought on Craigslist and at Goodwill.

Re: Are these suitable units for a cage?

Thank you so much everyone! I actually checked at work yesterday. They have the same ones Sears do! We restocked without me knowing. I ended up getting one box and I'm fiddling with it to see if I need another box or not. I'm checking up on the fleece right now. I think I'm going to do something with my friend's fleece scraps, 'cause she makes these silly hats and said she had a ton of scraps I'm welcomed to if I need it.

So, if you guys are looking for anything like this, check out Kmart. If it's the Stor brand that Sears has, it's got all the same 1.5inch grid size!!

Those are fine grids. Alot of us use the Bed Bath and Beyond grids. Mainly because of the coupons we get in the mail.

Be sure to stire clear of the Target grids. The squares tend to be too large.

Re: Are these suitable units for a cage?

Yes, I read the sticky about Target grids changing and having the larger spaces between them!

I'm not sure if I should make a three-by-three, or a two-by-four cage. I have enough for either of them, plus two left over. I think I'll make a little fleece jungle for them when I have fleece!

Has anyone ever tried making a little door? I'm getting a free guinea pig cage off of craigslist (if I can) and I'm going to see if I can attach it to the cage somehow...I think it'd be easier for getting the piggies out for lap-time, but I'm not too certain.

a 2X4 would be best. Max zooming space.

As far as a door, you should be able to pick them up through the open top of the area.
If you're making a lid, many users have the lid secured in a way so they can open up the top to fetch piggys.

I think I'll go with a two by four, then! And yes, I'm doing a a top so my kitties or doggies don't get into to cage. I'll have to mess with my zip ties until I find a good hinge-like design!

Do you know what clothes pins are?
You could use those to keep the top shut. And zip tie the back 4 grids along the cage's back wall to give it a hinged like spot.

Also, some users have great luck with using wire shelving.

Re: Are these suitable units for a cage?

Yes, I have a bunch of plastic clothes pins laying around! I might pick up some wire shelving tomorrow, after I get paid. I'm thinking of picking up another box so that I can have a raised cage, too! I'll have to mess around with it today. The clothes pin idea is really smart, I never thought about that! It would make cleaning easier, too...so I don't have to dissemble the entire cage top.
Thank you for all your help!

Re: Are these suitable units for a cage?

if you want a raised cage, and you have acess to basic building tools, I would STRONLY suggest making a wood one. I need to be able to step into my cage because it's large, and it can be mighty hard to clean and catch pigs. I made a wood one, we just brought it up today. I got to decorate it and everything too. I would start off making the biggest cage you can possibly fit, because expanding gets addicting (for me anyways :P) and it's easier to just start big in my opinion.

Fleece is a WONDERFUL option, I love using it in my cage! Definitely see about the fleece scraps. You may want to look into another box of grids, for use as a playpen. I counted up, and right now I have over 70 grids being used in some way. And I don't have grid tunnels :P

I'm thinking about getting a wood pallet from work and modifying it to something you were talking about, @madelineelaine ! I'm thinking of the play pin idea too, I'll have to do that next paycheck. I just got half a yard of fleece for a fleece forest and giving my piggies a little bit more privacy around their pigloo!

that sounds wonderful I love my stand I made it 14 inches high, so I can still step onto it. We bought laundry baskets, again, perfect height, for storage underneath. Quick and cheap.

So, did you just make a little table-like area for under your cage? I want it off the floor but still low...Hopefully if I get it up off the floor about a foot or less my dog will stop stealing the puppy training pads I have down for the piggies to pee on until I get a better floor for them...How sturdy would it be to just buy another box of grids and build underneath it?

Here are my girl's cage. My stand is VERY sturdy, is low, but high enough off the ground.
