Question Where to Put a cage?

Hello. I'm new to cavys and preparing for my first pair! I am wondering about cage placement and am worried about the cavys jumping out of the cage. I have a three year old so I was thinking about putting the cage up on a table so he coulding just reach in and grab them. The table is also somewhere where I can see it from any place in my apt, so I could keep an eye on my son (To make sure he's not trying to play with the lil guys w/o me around!). But I am worried that a table might be too high for the cavys. I mean can they jump out of a C&C cage? Are there any suggestions on where I might put my cage to be safe for everyone? perhaps building ideas to make it safer on a table top? Any advice would be awesome! thnx!

I have never had a piggie come close to jumping out of a c&c cage. If you would feel more comfortable haveing a lid them by all means go ahead and make one.

It's very, very rare for a pig to jump or climb out of a C&C cage.

You can build a lid to keep your son out, or build a stand from extra grids.

Re: Where to Put a cage?

I saw some of those videos and at least some of them were cases of males who smelled female piggies in the room and were trying to get to them. I imagine a determined male could get over a grid wall, especially if he could climb onto something like a pigloo to take him part way up.
There was a discussion today about a couple of adventurous pigs who came close to getting out even with no piggies of the opposite sex in the room. I think it is pretty rare. But you could always zip-tie extra grids half way up the grid walls to form a higher barrier if your piggies are jumpers.

I'd suggest building an attached base out of grids rather than putting a cage on a table in your particular case - a curious 3 YO might pull a cage off a table, which could be a real disaster.

Re: Where to Put a cage?

I agree with blackarrow. I have my piggers in the living room. My cage is a 2x5 C&C on a cubes stand. It also has a lid that keeps my own three year old and the dogs out of it.

In any case, it is a good learning experience for your son to learn how to treat and handle the pigs. My own daughter is very gentle and she knows to use her quiet voice around them. She loves to lay on the floor with them at floor time and feeds them veggies.

You just need a few ground rules. One of my most important ones is. No walking when the pigs are out. My daughter crawls when they have floor time. It is safer, so no pig gets accidentally stepped on.

Chances are your son will pick them up, so teach him how to do it right. My daughter does a fabulous job holding them around the waist with one hand and putting the other under their butts.

Good luck with the future piggers.

    Unless they are G-Force pigs.

You can make a top for the cage with closet shelving. It's made of wire.
    Or just use more grids.

Re: Where to Put a cage?

It' been quite a while since my son (11) was 3, but I do remember him being rather clumsy then! For the safety of your son and the critters, you might want to place the cage in an area he will not have direct access to, or be tempted to reach into it. Piggies are FAST little buggers and your son could fall while trying to pick one up. A good idea would for your son handling the piggies would be sitting on the floor at floor time. Lots safer for everyone!

Please do not misunderstand - I am not criticizing you. Just making a suggestion based on my own recent (& limited ) experience as a piggie owner, and a mom.

Good luck to you and your new pets! Post some pics!

A three year old shouldn't bring the guinea pig out by himself. GPs can easily squeeze out of your hands and a fall can injure or kill them. Under supervision, you could have your child sit on the floor and you can let he/she pet it. On rare occasions, you'll find a guinea pig that can climb out of an enclosure. We had one at our rescue that was able to so covered it.

Oh I wasn't planning on letting him hold the lil guy at all! Sorry if my message came across that way. He has a pig at day care (which i feel awful for, poor guy is in a tiny cage and has to be around screaming 3 year olds and all alone on the weekends!! ) and knows that he's not supposed to feed or touch the pig w/o a teacher around. I want to put the cage on the table because it is somewhere I can see the cage no matter where I am in case he forgets the rules.
