My New Coroplast Alternitive Cage!

As many of you know my Olive had babies 3 weeks ago and as it turned out 3 of the 4 are boars and I already had 3 boars and 3 sows and well now I have 6 boars and 4 sows. So spent a lot of time thinking and designing a cage that would meet atleast the minimum sizes and still fit the space that I have available that can be used for my piggies.

My piggies are in my kitchen/dinning room area. This is what I came up with My New Cage for 10 Piggies - Guinea Pig Cage Photos and I couldn't get the coroplast in the time frame that I had to get a cage built to seperate the baby boars. I used cheap table cloths and I ziptied to the grids. This should work atleast until the coroplast comes in since I am planning to get the colored sheets and not the white. I still haven't decided what color I want. I am thinking either brown or green. I haven't ordered the coroplast yet. Suggestions on the color would be great.

A 2x5 is the minimum size for 4 sows so they are on top and the minimum size cage for 6 boars is a 2x8 and a 3x5 is the same as a 2x8 if I am not mistaken.

Do you think this is suitable for them?

Re: My New Coroplast Alternitive Cage!

A 3x5 is a bit smaller than a 2x8. (You multiply: 3x5=15 and 2x8=16)

Hopefully the boars will continue to get along in their cage. It's a bit on the small size, and the fact that they will be able to smell the sows may decrease the chance of them getting along. So keep an eye on them and make sure you have multiples of everything and hideys with multiple entrances/exits.

Don't forget that you need to baby proof your cage. Babies can get through those grids. You can either overlap the grids or raise the sides (you can use cardboard) to 10".

Re: My New Coroplast Alternitive Cage!

A 3x5 would be the equivalent of a 2x7+1 square grid. If it's possible, you may want to expand it and add at least another 1 square grid of space or another 1x2 area.

Baby proofing is important. People often think things cannot happen to them, at least until it happens. Safety should be the number one priority. It's always so much better to be safe rather than sorry.

I would add another 1x1 area but currently all the grids are now be used atleast until the pups are bigger so that they can't fit through the grids since they are being used for baby proofing. I will be keeping an eye on them to make sure there is no fighting among them for now.

They appear to be getting along great. Although at first I thought that may be a problem one of the original 3 boars attempted to challenge the boss and after a few minute stand off backed off and now they are very peaceful and everyone has settled in. Order has been astablished for now or atleast until one of babies decide they want to challenge the boss.
