Need some advice

I'm in the process of build an alternative cage and I'm going with a garden theme for it. I was brains storming and I noticed that people have posted about wheat grass.Would it be safe to put a large planter with grass in the cage. I'm talking about making a 1x2 grid "yard" in the actual cage.
The cage itself is going to 3x5 with a 1x3 kitchen loft so with the "yard" it will be 3x4 open area to run. This is just the cage they will be in when were at work they will have free range of our dining room when home.

Let me know what you think. Thanks

Re: Need some advice

I would not put it in the cage as the guinea pigs are most likely to destroy it and make a mess to boot ! I had a clump of regular grass growing in a planter and when the girls were out for floor time I heard a lot of racket. They had pulled up the clump of grass and ate it right down to the roots and were having a ball playing in the dirt, which was all over the room !! They are such rascals! Anyway, I am growing wheat grass in a variety of containers, like cottage cheese and yogurt containers. It is super easy to grow and I may "present" a small container during floor time while under my watch.

Wheat grass is a big seed that's easy to plant and grows very high, very quickly. You shear off the top inches and let it continue to grow. People make a drink out of it, so the seeds are available at health food stores or online. I got mine from Ebay. Very cheap.. less than $4 including shipping for a huge bunch of seeds.

No, it would not be safe to put a planter of wheat grass in the cage. The reason is that they could drag dirt out of the planter making a mess in the cage. It's better to have the planter not accessible to them and to cut the wheat grass and feed it to them that way.

Re: Need some advice

I'd recommend something you can take in an out of the cage rather than a permanent planter. First of all, they're going to pee in it and poop on their grass constantly. Second of all, they will eat so much of it so fast it will never get a chance to re-grow if it's in there with them all the time. But they'd definitely love having a good supply of grass!
