Question Size question?

I am confused. We had an unexpected litter (mama was pregnant when we got her, we didn't know). Only one is a boy. We wanted to keep him close, but don't want any more babies. We expanded and divided the cage, even rearranged our human furniture to make room, so that the boy now has 7&1/2 sg. feet and the four girls have 13 sq. ft. I was under the impression that this was the minimum size. I posted a pic here and it was removed and I received a message warning me of inappropriate pics. The message said that my cage was to small. Did I misunderstand the size chart? Thanks.

Re: Size question?

Are you using the c&c cage?
What were the measurements for the male's cage length wise and width wise from the inside of the cage?
If it is in grids how many grids is each cage?

Re: Size question?

We were unable to find the grids so we built it out of shelving (like many people here build their lids out of). My husband cut the shelves and zip tied them together. We used coroplast for the floor. The smaller side of the cage is 2.5 x 3 feet. The girl's side is 4.5 x 3.
As I said before, this was an unexpected litter. We signed up for two piggies and ended up with five. We have been having a lot of fun with them and are enjoying the new additions. I was so proud of the cage we made and then to get message telling me that my cage was to small made me feel awful. We used this site as a guide so that we could do right by these adorable animals.

Re: Size question?

Your cages do meet the minimum requirements, although I would expand them if possible. (Keep in mind that one grid is 14" inches, so a 2x4 cage is not 2 feet x 4 feet.)

I would PM a mod about the pictures. It is possible they had trouble gauging the size from the pictures.

Re: Size question?

Please do post the picture here in this thread so it can be seen.

By my measurements, being familiar with shelving sizes, your cage is just a little over 6sqft. While it is much better then most cages it is not quite good enough to remain in the gallery as we try to keep the gallery a showplace of proper housing. We have to remain strict because people get ideas from the gallery and a cage that is a tad too small can be seen as adequate and lead to misinformation on sizes and animals get smaller homes then they should.

Re: Size question?

I did see your cage last night. It looks good. You didn't put the size in the description. Maybe it was hard to tell the size from the picture.

How old is your boy now? I saw his picture you've uploaded. If he's only 3 days old, he needs to be with mommy until he's 21 days old. Do you plan to neuter him when he's older so he can be with the girls?
