Re: Biting Grids

Do you only have one pig? If so, your pig is probably bored and needs a friend.

Do you provide unlimited high quality hay? If not, your pig needs hay at all times to chew on.

That's what I was thinking, he did it a little before Fred passed away though. I'm getting a new friend for him Sunday (YAY!), from a member here who is meeting up with me, so hopefully he will stop when he has a friend!

Also, yes mine has unlimited amount of hay at all times, which I freshen up everyday. Thanks akstrohm.

Is it dangerous for them to do this?

Re: Biting Grids

It's not dangerous for his health unless he is ingesting lots of paint, but he really does need a friend. He sounds bored and lonely. Guinea pigs are social animals and should not be kept alone. Check his sex and get him a same-sex buddy ASAP!

How much paint do you consider to be "lots"

Re: Biting Grids

The point is that he needs a friend regardless of whether or not he is ingesting a lot of paint. I bet the chewing will decrease substantially when he gets a friend. How big is your cage? It could also be that he doesn't have enough room to run around and is getting frustrated.

Re: Biting Grids

My cage is a 2x4 cc cage witha loft and ramp... I would like to know how much paint is too much to be injested because he does this often. Also I am currently looking for a friend for adoption.

Re: Biting Grids

A 2x4 should be good for him, so that's probably not your problem. I would give him extra floor time for more mental stimulation. I can't really tell you "if he chews more than X minutes, that's bad". Obviously if you notice any health problems he needs to see a vet, but that's probably not too likely. Good luck with him.
