What do you suggest for a stand?

Hello, all! Right now, I'm in the process of trying to adopt a little piggie of my own, and I have a bit of a dilemma. I read that cavy cages are best kept off the floor because of drafts and vibrations from vacuums and foot traffic, so I figure I'm going to need a stand for my cage. I'll probably be making/buying a 2x3 C&C, but now I'm not sure what to put it on.

The cage will be going in the slightly fancy living room of my slightly picky boyfriend's house, so I can't just plop cinder blocks or a large tupperware down on our hardwood floor.

What do you suggest for use as a stand with such a "large" cage??

Re: What do you suggest for a stand?

I use a long folding table that is just BARELY long enough to hold my 2x5 cage. That could be a possibility for you? You could always find a long, elegant table cloth that will hide the fact that its a folding table.

Re: What do you suggest for a stand?

When mine was off the floor, I had grids strategically placed length and width and ziptied to the bottom grids of the floor of the cage, and when the weight of it kinda presses down into the carpet, it gave great support, and was also great for storage space underneath. You can see the pics of that cage in my gallery labeled "old cage".

I have since put my cage back on the floor as it's 3 stories now, and I'm too short to reach to top level with it 4 grids high, HA! Good luck building your cage, it's so addicting as there are so many ways to configure them, I've remodeled several times in the few months I've had guinea pigs.

Re: What do you suggest for a stand?

I made a stand for my 2x4 with a 2x3 upper level cage out of grids. I used 10 grids to make it and it works really well(and my cats like hiding and playing underneath the cage.)

Re: What do you suggest for a stand?

2x3 is actually small as far as C&Cs go. Most people seem to use extra grids to make their own stands. (I used extra grids, and the collapsible cloth storage bins made to fit inside them, to make a nice looking storage unit for my cage.)

Re: What do you suggest for a stand?

I've used Ikea table as a stand before, it worked fine but I like using grids. I like the grids more because I can expand the cage as needed. If you haven't adopt the pig, please adopt a least two. They are social animals and prefer to have a friend of their own kind. If you have more space, please build a bigger cage for your pigs. I started with 2x4 for two boars and felt it was too small. I changed it to 2x6.

These are my favorite cage stands. Hope they're fancy enough for your bf's house

Wow, Lissie, many of these are terrific, and ones I hadn't seen before, as I was spending most of my time searching for enclosed cages (which I need). You should nominate some of these for Teresa's photo contest!

Yes, these are some of my most favorite cages. I can say that I have seen all the cages in the gallery. I'm a cage freak

Re: What do you suggest for a stand?

Wow! Some of the cage stands with the storage bins are really great, Lissie! Thank you for showing me those; I would never have thought about that myself. I'm sure my boyfriend would like that idea very much, and I could easily store all piggy supplies right there.

@Dichotomy83: That's also a great idea. I could probably pick up a small table for cheap on Craigslist or at the local junk store, and I know I can find a pretty table cloth to match his living room style.
