Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0
I'm asking this for a friend who is having a small crisis. She has four sows in a largish cage, and did have 2 boars in another. Unfortunately one of the boars died and she's now thinking it might be better to join the two cages together and put the boar in with the females as she doesn't think that Jezza will get on with another boar. However, this means that there will be 5 guineapigs in a cage that is about 2 metres squared. (C&C alternative, fleece bedding). Is this too small for that many pigs? I suggested that she move the boars cage next to the sows so they'll be near but her cage is made from a something that wont allow the cavies to see through at each other. Any replies would be very appreciated, thanks. |

I sure as heck hope she's planning to neuter that boar (who needs to remain away for 3-4 weeks post op) or she'll have a lot more then 5 pigs. |

All her pig are from rescues, so the boars were neutered there Don't worry, we are sensible people. |

It should work because on this site, 1.2m is the minimum for 4 pigs so 2m should be OK. Is the remaining boar fixed? Because if not, please don't put him in with all those girls! I don't think your friend wants 4 GP litters! She can put the cages next to each other if she wants to first introduce them but if she decides not to do that, tell her to look on here: Guinea Pigs Social Life And go down to the introductions part. It helped me out loads! Hope all goes well!! |

Unless the male is neutered, he should not be placed with the females. If you put their cages next to each other, make sure his has a lid. If he is neutered, 2 square meters on a single level is okay for five pigs. Males can be successfully introduced to each other. |

Ahhh up here the rescues don't routinely neuter boars. They only do it when they have a bonded male/female pair come into custody. |

Yes, it appears it should be an adequate size for that many pigs, and I think it's a good idea not to leave the male pig lonely. |
