Question future piggy owner needing cage help

i'm getting two young female piggies and i have a basic gist of what to do, but i'm still confused. i got the metal grids and some coroplast but i don't know about fleece or towels or litter boxes or any of the accesories piggies need. i don't want them to get hurt or chew on things they're not supposed to. should i elevate them? i have a dog that runs free in the house and a cat that sometimes gets in. should i get another set of grids to put on top? should i yet another set to make a second floor of the cage? what entertainment devices should i put in there? i have a limited budget on this project. i've read all the information pages that this site has to offer but, i guess i'm too blockheaded or something. please help!

Re: future piggy owner needing cage help

Check out some of the older threads for tops for the cages. I think they are coated
shelves that you can buy at Home Depot.

I use fleece and another area for their 'kitchen'. I use bedding like Carefresh in the kitchen area. I also use an exercise pen around the cage
because of the dogs. I hoped this helped a little.

I love how you said 'entertainment devices' instead of 'toys'.

3. Elevating the cage high enough will make it easier to clean and it'll probably stop your dog from bothering it.
4. Some pigs use litterboxes, and some don't, but putting them in a corner the pigs like to poop is a good idea. You need a hayrack (this can be made from grids), two water bottles, two food bowls (and maybe a big veggie bowl), and a few hidey-houses (you can get those online or from petstores).
5. You can make a second floor if you want. Check out the galleries, here: Closed, Multi-Level - Guinea Pig Cage Photos

Re: future piggy owner needing cage help

Another posted told me of Home Depot's 6 ft. shelving. A 16" and a 12" piece work nicely on a 2 x 5 grid cage. See the thread regarding "lid" for all the details !

I just got fleece throws at Box Lots for $2.50 each !
