You can also check yard sale, flea market, craigslist and freecycle. Some members here have got free cubes from craigslist and freecycle. |

Sharing some recent information on the topic: I am in Los Angeles, and my Target is now carrying RE(Room Essentials) 6-cube boxes that come in mixed grids i.e. 9 panels(8x8 grids) and 14 panels(5x5 grids) for $16.99. These stock are poorly manufactured - misaligned, bent, or with sharp edges. In my opinion, the 8x8 panels are unsafe, I can just imagine my piggies sticking their heads through and getting stuck. They should not be anywhere in the piggies' accessible area. On the contrary, the 5x5 panels are large enough for my piggies(they are medium sized about 2.2lbs) to slip through easily, so in that sense, it is not unsafe. However, it should not be used for cages, especially if raised off the floor. I use them for storage. I would say stick with the 9x9 grid panels. Is K-mart also carrying the 9x9 grid panels? |

When I was searching for coroplast, I found this company. They are sign makers. Banner Stands ,Retractable Banner Stands I asked them if they have any coroplast sheets that have any printing error or anything they are dumping, they said they do and I can have them for free. Turns out their warehouse is in Southern California. They just happen to have sales office in Northern California. Too bad. I could have gotten my coro for free. |

We had a bit of a surprise with the target grids, as this is where we got the ones for the first cage. Luckily, since we are simply building an addition, we can put the too-large grids in inaccessible parts of the cage and have extra of the right grids. The recommended grids tend to run around less than $20 Coroplast, corrugated plastic, gatorboard, sign-board, plastic cardboard, comes from any sign shop. Occasionally, local political party centers will have signs left over post-election that are made out of the stuff, but it may be more expensive. My sign shop is a lovely little place, very friendly, who had the stuff cut and in my hands almost before I finished ordering it. It was awesome. It only cost about $15 or so dollars, very cheap. Add to that the fleece, which I got on sale at Joann's for a dream, (50% off!) and I ended up spending about $30. Plus towels from walmart, for $3 each, and I need 4 per cage cleaning, so $12, there. Thrift stores are great and you can usually find fleece there, and sometimes towels, but be sure that you wash it really well in vinegar and hang it outside in the sun for a while (thrift store smell is STUBBORN!). Then I had ramps to build, which is about $7 from the dollar store and Big Lots. And zipties. Lots and lots of zip ties. The funny thing is, that when you add all of this: About $84, it's less than ONE MONTH's worth of disposable bedding. I LOVE FLEECE!!! |
